Scope of Job:
Responsible for overseeing the scientific diving programs training, operation, and safety functions. To work with the scientific community to facilitate underwater research projects and carry out the scientific objectives of scientific diving operations safely and efficiently.

Description of Duties:
  • Plans, implements and administers a University-wide scientific diving safety program.
  • Oversees and ensures diving activities are planned, managed and conducted in accordance with the relevant statutory provisions, regulations and approved codes of practice.
  • Serves as a member of the University Dive Board.
  • Responsible for conducting dive safety training and documentation for all staff.
  • Reviews and approves dive plans and equipment.
  • Ensures compliance with UTRGV and AAUS standards for safety, training and certification of divers.
  • Manages and maintains all university owned dive and dive support equipment.
  • Manages dive program records and documentation.
  • Works with the scientific community to facilitate underwater research projects.
  • Collaborates with university faculty on the development of dive-related curricula.
  • Interacts with scientists to help carry out the scientific objectives of the diving operations safely and efficiently.
  • Participates on occasion, in fieldwork that includes conducting research dives.
  • Prepares reports of diving activities for management.
  • Oversees scientific diving operations in the field as necessary.
  • Acts, on occasion, as a backup deckhand on university owned vessels.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s degree in marine or related science from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
AAUS scientific diver certification and certified as a diving instructor by a nationally recognized diving agency (e.g., NAUI, PADI, SDI), CPR certified.

Required Experience:
One (1) year of diving experience and experience as a certified diving instructor and managing SCUBA equipment with compressor maintenance tasks for SCUBA cylinder fills. American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scientific diver certification.

Preferred Experience:
AAUS scientific diver certification. Experience as a certified diving instructor, providing instruction on scuba diving safety procedures, managing SCUBA equipment with compressor maintenance tasks for SCUBA cylinder fills, and following and training students to the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) dive safety policies.

Equipment:
Use of standard office/diving equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/Marine Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Hazardous Conditions - exposure to inclement weather, rough seas, glare and extreme temperatures. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Other:
This position will be subject to a pre-employment physical. Ability and skill necessary to: perform a variety of underwater tasks under adverse/difficult conditions; perform demonstration quality skills for training/instructional purposes; manage quality assurance/quality compliance issues with institutional diving policy; manage personnel; and understand risk management and exposure mitigation processes. Knowledge and capability to ensure the adherence to appropriate procedures for using and maintaining equipment or technical instruments associated with scientific diving operations to meet industry standards in a safe, efficient and effective manner. Ability to coordinate and manage facilities, equipment, supplies, and related resources in compliance with health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
