    Department Summary

    We are a diverse and growing department with strengths in the study of modern and pre-modern languages, linguistics, and literatures of China, Japan and Korea. The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures offers a Chinese Major, Minor, as well as an MA and PhD in Chinese Studies.

    Position Summary

    The Pro Tem Instructor of Chinese will teach Chinese language courses at the intermediate level and will take on other responsibilities associated with these courses such as developing teaching materials, grading, supervising Graduate Employees, and meeting and communicating with students.

    Minimum Requirements

  • M.A. degree in Chinese language pedagogy, linguistics, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching Chinese at the university level.
  • Native or near-native ability in Chinese and English to teach at any level within the curriculum.

    Professional Competencies

  • Knowledge of foreign language teaching methodologies.
  • Knowledge of teaching-material development.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to teach effectively both independently and in a team environment at a variety of levels (beginning to intermediate).

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in implementing classroom technology (Canvas, Panopto, Zoom).
  • Experience in using content-based teaching methodologies.
  • Experience in student-centered and form-focused teaching.
