Position Summary:
The Computer Science Department at the University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho, seeks a full-time, tenure track faculty at the rank of Assistant Professor commencing Fall 2023. We will consider candidates from any area of computer science, but preference will be given to candidates with a strong background in Robotics and AI/ML, computer vision, or natural language processing, to support our newly created Center for Intelligent Industrial Robotics (CI2R).In addition to the newly created Center for Intelligent Industrial Robotics, researchers at the University of Idaho are supported by numerous research centers, including the Center for Secure and Dependable Systems, the Institute for Interdisciplinary Data Sciences, the National Institute for Advanced Transportation Technology, the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, and Institute for Modeling Complex Interactions. Significant interdisciplinary research collaborations and well-established working relationships exist with Nations Labs and regional industry.The successful candidate will have an earned PhD in Computer Science or a closely related area, evidence of successful collaborative and interdisciplinary research, and evidence of strong teaching capability. Tenure track faculty are expected to establish a successful, collaborative, externally funded research lab, to support the teaching mission of the department at all levels and provide service to the university community. Startup funding, research support, and a reduced teaching load will be extended to help the new appointee establish a successful career and develop an externally funded research program.The University of Idaho is a land-grant research institution founded in 1889. It has a strong tradition of research and teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The CS department has expertise in cybersecurity, robotics, software engineering, embedded systems, ML, data science, programming languages and databases. This position will complement these existing strengths and leverage a large body of existing opportunities to collaborate across the University including our main (Moscow) and branch campuses (Idaho Falls and Coeur d’Alene).We highly encourage candidates from underrepresented US minority groups and/or females to apply for this position. Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD or comparable terminal degree in Computer Science or a closely related field
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Experience working with collaborating entities
  • Experience building an externally funded research lab
  • Experience analyzing and managing data
  • Experience engaging and teaching students
  • Experience mentoring and guiding graduate students and new researchers in a research program


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated success in research and publications and presentations in an appropriate field.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher
  • Expertise in at least one of: robotics, machine learning/artificial intelligence, machine vision
  • Demonstrated ability to perform interdisciplinary research
  • Demonstrated ability to perform collaborative research
  • Demonstrated ability to generate external funding
