Description:

The Sidney Poitier New American Film School at Arizona State University seeks a full-time Clinical Assistant Professor in film with expertise in legal and business practices in the U.S. entertainment industry (production, development, and management). This is a full-time fixed-term position. This position will be appointed across two of ASU’s locations, ASU Tempe Campus and the Media and Immersive eXperience (MIX) Center in Mesa, AZ, where teaching will occur. The start date for this position is Fall 2023.

Our new colleague will be well versed in traditional modes of film production, as well as legal and business practices in the entertainment industry (production, development, and management). The Clinical Assistant Professor of Film Legal and Business Practices will teach courses including introduction and intermediate film and media business practices and courses in laws that impact the film/media industry, as well as developing new courses in the candidate’s area of expertise, interest, or specialization. The Clinical Assistant Professor may be required to teach a combination of in-person, online, and hybrid courses, in addition to mentoring students through aspects of the Sidney Poitier New American Film School capstone sequences. The Clinical Assistant Professor is expected to maintain their own research or creative work, and will contribute appropriate service to the school, the Herberger Institute, the university, and the community.

Required Qualifications:

• Applicants must hold an M.A., M.F.A., M.B.A, Ph.D., JD, or a graduate degree in a related field, and 3 or more years of experience in film/media business or law or a related field (international applicants must hold a terminal degree in order to be considered);
• Demonstrated teaching experience in secondary, college/university, or professional settings;
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, and social engagement;
• Demonstrated knowledge of legal and business practices in the entertainment industry (ie production, development, management), including familiarity with current US law regarding copyright, distribution, and other film business matters.

Desired Qualifications:

• Experience developing new coursework and academic curriculums/programs including online and/or hybrid courses;
• Experience in multiple facets of the film and television, focused on business and legal developments;
• Experience with film, television and/or short film marketing, distribution, or producing;
• Track record of research, publication, or creative work related to film and/or television.
