Description

The Assistant Dean supports the Dean's administrative efforts, keeps the Dean informed at all times, and helps define the operational structure of the College of Science and Humanities. This is a ten (10) month faculty position and administrative position with a reduced teaching load, which reports directly to the Dean. The successful candidate will have knowledge of higher education, be an innovative thinker, and be committed to collaborative problem-solving. The Assistant Dean will work closely with an experienced Dean focused on faculty support, best practices, and keenly tuned to supporting institutional growth and success.

Examples of Duties
  • Support the Dean and the College of Science and Humanities:
    • With the Dean, oversee the development of the master schedule, assign teaching responsibilities that are equitable, oversee registration, monitor and perform schedule changes.
    • Assist in interviewing, hiring, and evaluating adjunct faculty.
    • Assist with developing and monitoring the COSH operational and capital budget.
    • Participate in marketing, ideation and strategic planning for the College.
    • Provide mentorship for the development of faculty research and scholarly agenda.
    • Make recommendations for faculty to serve on College and University committees and related activities.
    • Provide timely feedback and assist in the completion of performance reviews of faculty as per the Faculty Handbook.
    • Assign advisees to faculty and assist with advising training.
  • Provide leadership to ensure the appropriate design, execution, and ongoing review of COSH general education and program curricula.
  • Lead - develop and manage student internship opportunities.
  • Assist with the coordination of departmental and college assessments.
  • Assist in addressing student issues and academic appeals.
  • Assist in developing online courses and programs for the college independently and in collaboration with the online division.

Typical Qualifications

Education:
  • A terminal degree in a Science or Humanities discipline or relevant related field is required.
  • Development or training in leadership is preferred.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 3-5 years teaching at the college level.
  • Demonstrated scholarship and teaching effectiveness.
  • Earned terminal degree.

Preferred:
  • Previous experience in academic leadership at the director or chair level.
  • Evidence of committee work at the University level.
  • Evidence of faculty mentoring experience.
  • Experience with varied instructional and assessment methods.

Other:
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration across varied constituencies.
  • Ability to identify and effectively address challenges.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, record of scholarship, strong knowledge of assessment practices, and working knowledge of budget issues.
  • Other duties as assigned.
