Job Summary/Basic Function
The Manufacturing Engineering Technician reports to the Chairperson of the Department, who reports to the Dean of the College, who reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. The general duties include overseeing the entire operation, maintenance, and supply of all laboratories in the Manufacturing Engineering Department while ensuring proper training and safety of students and faculty. The Manufacturing Engineering Technician will also support the fabrication, calibration, testing and maintenance of existing and prototype equipment used to support the Land Grant mission.
Responsibilities:
The Manufacturing Engineering Technician will:
• Provide laboratory housekeeping, maintenance, and security in the Manufacturing Engineering Department.
• Maintain files for operating and maintenance manual of major equipment.
• Monitor the usage of equipment, tools, and shop supplies.
• Order laboratory supplies
• Assist in preparation of ( ABET ) Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and future ( ATMAE ) Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering self-studies.
• Provide instruction for students and faculty in the safe operation of departmental equipment.
• Supervise work study students and/or student research assistants as needed.
• Support the activities of departmental and Land Grant research
• Participate in departmental and Land Grant research planning meetings.
• Take a lead role in establishing and enforcing laboratory policies and procedures.
• Update and maintain laboratory computers with needed software support and be a liaison between the department and the Information Technology Office.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as determined by the department chairperson.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
The Manufacturing Engineering Technician must/must be:
• Dedicated to ensuring excellence in laboratory and curriculum delivery, development, and continuous improvement.
• Possess full knowledge of modern machine shop practices and manufacturing process operations.
• Possess the ability to build, test, and maintain systems comprising of mechanical, electrical, and computer components.
• Capable of providing laboratory instruction to students and faculty.
• Establish and maintain good relationships with vendors and customers.
• Able to be agile with various projects, scheduling, and other work demands.
Minimum Qualifications
• A.S. or B.S. degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering or Engineering Technology is desired but not required.
• Experience in hands-on CAD / CAM / CNC programming and operation of the feeler VMP - 580 Machining Center, Pro Track 1630 Turning Center, EDM machine or able acquire these skills in a short period of time.
• Experience in welding, turning, milling and grinding
• Experience in fundamental manufacturing and assembly processes.
• Experience in Solid Edge, Unigraphics NX, and MasterCam software packages or possess the ability to learn them in a short period of time.
• Must possess good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills for training students and faculty or equipment and operations.
