Position Description

The Department of Communication Studies at Texas State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor whose research and teaching focuses upon civic engagement. This interest area broadly includes the examination of communication processes related to community engagement, public advocacy, political activism, social inequalities, and social justice movements.
We are looking for a scholar whose research employs rhetorical, critical, and/or qualitative methods, and is prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in rhetorical methods, in addition to courses in their areas of expertise. We seek a faculty colleague who is motivated to engage in service to our department, university, and community, and who has personal experience with and/or shares our commitment to educational equity, social justice, and the high-quality education of students from historically underserved and systematically marginalized communities. Individuals from historically underrepresented and systematically marginalized communities are strongly encouraged to apply. The department also encourages candidates with evidence of externally funded research activities to apply. All positions are subject to the availability of funds.

Required Qualifications

  1. Earned Ph.D. in communication or communication studies by the position start date (September 1, 2023).
  2. Demonstrated expertise in civic engagement (i.e., coursework, teaching, research, and/or service in this area).
  3. Evidence of university-level teaching experience.
  4. Evidence of research in the area of communication and civic engagement.


Preferred Qualifications

  1. Demonstrate research productivity through peer-reviewed scholarship that addresses concerns related to the foci of this position, such as published articles and the presentation of research at professional conferences.
  2. Are prepared to teach rhetorical methods at the undergraduate and graduate level.
  3. Are prepared to teach courses in civic engagement, community organizing, political activism, leadership, and/or discourses of underserved communities, and are prepared to include project-based service learning with community partners, community-centered projects, or other civically engaged applied learning activities in their courses.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to mentor and teach undergraduate and graduate students who make up a diverse student body.
  5. Provide evidence of externally-supported scholarly effectiveness including funded research activities and/or community development projects.
  6. A record of service to department, university, profession, and/or communities.
