Department Summary
The Office of Admissions includes over 50 staff who are engaged in the work of recruitment and outreach to prospective undergraduates and making admission decisions on all applicants for freshman, transfer, and post-baccalaureate undergraduate admission. Admissions is a unit of the Division of Student Services & Enrollment Management and work closely with several other units of that division, especially Scholarships/Financial Aid and Orientation, as well as many other parts of campus.
Within Admissions, the recruitment & outreach team that includes this position is a dynamic, committed group of professionals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives who are often the first UO representatives that thousands of students per year from around the US and beyond will meet in the process of choosing whether to apply to and ultimately attend, the University of Oregon. Their care for the students extends beyond the desire to have students choose Oregon, and also extends to our outreach mission, making sure that students and their families feel empowered about the college preparation, search, and choice process, regardless of where they enroll. In light of the university's growing presence around the US and beyond, we are adding to this dedicated staff in order to accomplish even more in our work.
Position Summary
As a member of the Enrollment Management team, the Native American and Indigenous Recruitment Coordinator is responsible for representing the University of Oregon (UO) to multiple constituencies, including prospective students, their families, and school/community contacts.
This position has five primary responsibilities: (1) Admissions Counselor/Coordinator is responsible for representing the University of Oregon to multiple constituencies, including prospective students, their families, and school/community contacts. (2) Counselor/Coordinator oversees the continued development and implementation of a recruitment plan focusing on Native American students. (3) Maintains and further develops strong relationships with Oregon's nine federally recognized tribes, Indian schools in Oregon, and other Oregon Indian communities. (4) Works with the Assistant Vice President and Advisor to the President on Sovereignty and Government to Government Relations as they relate to Native American recruitment and retention. (5) Counselor/Coordinator is also responsible for admissions- and office-related duties and other projects as assigned. Position reports to the Senior Assistant Director of Multicultural Recruitment.
Additional expectations of the position:
- This position requires an extensive amount of travel, often
including locations that are not serviced by public
transportation.
- This position must be able to work irregular hours and travel
extensively on nights and weekends.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
- One year of experience working with people from various
backgrounds, particularly with people from Oregon's nine federally
recognized tribes and Indian communities.
- One year of experience creating/implementing ideas,
initiatives, and networking opportunities with advocacy for Native
American and Indigenous students in K-12, Post-Secondary, or
Community Based Organizations.
Professional Competencies
- Knowledge of and/or experience with tribal educational
systems.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
- Ease in using technology for communication, record keeping, and
management of data.
- Must be detail-oriented and possess strong oral and written
communication skills.
- Manage a complicated daily, weekly and monthly schedule with
recurring important professional commitments on and off
campus.
- Ability to work in a collaborative and effective manner with
students, alumni, diverse families, administrators, and
faculty.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively with individuals
from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in student recruitment, education advocacy, or
college counseling.
- Proficiency and fluency (grammar, spelling, syntax, structure)
in both written and spoken Spanish.
- Experience within an institution of higher
education.
- Knowledge of university-specific computer application programs
and knowledge of university procedures.
