Media Relations Specialist


Johns Hopkins, founded in 1876, is America's first research university and home to nine world-class academic divisions working together as one university.

Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is looking for an experienced and savvy media expert to join our Global Marketing and Communications team. We are seeking a Media RelationsSpecialist who will be responsible for establishing, managing, and strengthening Carey Business School’s presence in major outward-facing media outlets. Reporting to the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications and with a specific, institutional strategic goal toward elevating global reputation, the specialist will increase the school’s exposure via timely, insightful, compelling, and research-driven media interest, placements, and impressions. The Media Relations Specialist will research and identify potential media interest in the school’s students, alumni, faculty, centers, initiatives, and research, acting on opportunities related to trends, timeliness, and anticipation of interests related to Carey Business School’s programs and experts.


The Media Relations Specialist will optimize media relations-oriented software as well as intentional personal relationships in media to most effectively distribute media releases, availabilities, advisories, and associated items. Working collaboratively with Creative Services, the Social Media Specialist, and this individual will help ensure a comprehensive strategic approach to Carey Business School’s external-facing communications. In alignment with the Office for Faculty and Research and with guidance from the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications and the Director of Communications, the individual will help prepare faculty members for media contact, including overseeing media training. The Media Relations Specialist will also be responsible for regularly reporting the school’s impressions in media outlets in a professional summary.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities



Media Relations (75%)

  • Relationship management
    • Identifies, establishes, deliberately nurtures, and manages relationships with key individuals at major local, regional, and national traditional and new media outlets.
    • Optimizes and manages media relations software/tools for pitching and placement.
    • Creates and maintains media opportunity list for proactive and reactive timely, as well as evergreen, items of interest.
    • Writes, revises, and distributes media advisories, availabilities, releases, and associated deliverables using Meltwater or other media relations-management software, email, phone calls, Twitter, and other appropriate means of distribution.
    • Regularly reports on earned media, whether pitched or organic, in professional summaries; recommends adjustments, additions, and other strategic approaches to media relations in service to overall business goal.
    • Identifies and stays on top of trends, hot topics, and opportunities for interest in Carey Business School experts, research, and/or items of interest in media.
    • Advises Sr. Director of Strategic Communications, Director of Communications, and broader Marketing & Communications team on media interest and responsiveness.
  • Pitching, placement, and preparation
    • With guidance from the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications and Director of Communications, devises and manages internal process for identifying items of media interest.
    • Identifies and promotes positive news stories about Carey Business School and research/expert, student, and/or alumni activities to appropriate media.
    • Identifies and proactively pitches audience-targeted stories to regional and national traditional and new media, including experts for breaking and trend stories.
    • Provides media relations services to faculty, students, and alumni, media training, including interview preparation, message development, press conference logistics, and support and communications planning for media-interested events.
    • Proposes, plans, and executes media events, including press conferences, where appropriate.
    • Plans and executes media-facing elements of school events, where appropriate, including management of media invitations, responses, and coverage needs.

Writing & Editing (20%)

  • Researches and writes content such as Carey Business School news, alumni and student profiles, faculty/research stories, and other types of communications for distribution in marketing emails, web content, and other messaging.
  • Edits and proofreads content created by other team members to ensure spelling, grammar, punctuation, and Associated Press style.

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • May include non-media-facing event attendance, social media, photography, representing the Director or Senior Director in meetings, etc.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
  • Two years of related experience in journalism, media relations, organized communications.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional experience may substitute for required education to the extent permitted by the Johns Hopkins University equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in higher education and/or working with research-oriented individuals a plus
  • Experience in business or business-research communication a plus

  • Proficiency in Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and MS Teams
  • First-hand knowledge of regional and national print, broadcast and electronic media outlets
  • Experience using SmartSheet or comparable project management tools
  • Establish working relationships with key media outlets, and eagerness to establish and nurture new relationships

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
