Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School is seeking a bright and effective communicator with the ability to strategize across an organization. We are seeking a Content Strategist who will be responsible for creating high-impact messaging strategy and content distribution plans to effectively communicate the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School brand, and advance the school’s awareness, engagement, and enrollment efforts. The Content Strategist will be a strategic thinker who excels at envisioning a multi-channel strategy, ensuring execution, managing a timeline and content calendar, leading content planning meetings involving multiple stakeholders toward actionable decisions, navigating complex and competing interests, and working on several high-priority projects concurrently with minimal supervision. With guidance from the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications and input from Marketing leadership team, the Content Strategist ideates opportunities for content creation and distribution, developing comprehensive, multi-channel distribution plans and reporting on their outcomes. In collaboration with the Social Media Strategist, Website Coordinator, and other appropriate team members, the individual will integrate the Marketing & Communications Department’s public-facing communications in a data- and best-practice-driven content mix appropriate for each platform. The Content Strategist will also serve as a contributing content creator, provide supporting direction to writers, and assist with copy editing for Marketing and Communications materials.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Content Strategy (60%)
- Collaborate with Marketing and Communications Senior Directors and Directors to develop strategies and campaigns for multi-channel content distribution.
- Function as the managing editor for most external-facing communication. Work with the Media Relations Manager on timing for media pitches and releases; work with the Communications Director on timing for distribution and supporting approaches for internal communications from the dean and other institutional VIPs.
- Support and ensure the consistently on-brand voice and tone of communications from conceptualization to distribution.
- Oversee content planning meetings to brainstorm content opportunities and maintain focused strategic interests in determining and supporting content creation.
- Create and manage the comprehensive content calendar and planning files.
- Collaborate with content specialists, including social media and media relations, to align and leverage content across channels.
- Provide direction and prioritization in a deadline-driven environment with shifting needs.
- Collaborate with Web Strategy and Analytics manager to optimize web-based content based on their insights and SEO considerations.
Writing & editing (35%)
- Research and write content such as alumni
and student profiles, faculty features, and other types of
communications for marketing emails, web content, campaign- and
program-collateral copy, video scripts, and other
messaging.
- Provide direction and support to freelance
content creators.
- Edit and proofread content created by other
team members to ensure spelling, grammar, punctuation, and
Associated Press style.
- Execute against the established Johns
Hopkins Carey Business School Brand Standards to align the school’s
marketing messaging to our recent rebranded tone and
voice.
- Ensure all communication projects and marketing efforts comply with University Branding Guidelines and JHU Use of Name Guidelines.
Other duties as assigned (5%)
- May include event attendance, social media,
photography, representing the Director or Senior Director in
meetings, etc.

- First-hand knowledge of regional and
national print, broadcast and electronic media outlets, and social
networking, including web-based and online media/information
sites.
- Experience using SmartSheet or comparable
project management tools.
- Experience using Adobe Creative Suite and
content management tools a plus.
- Knowledge of AP Style and ability to learn
and uphold school style guide,
- Ability to maintain a professional and
collaborative working relationship with faculty, students and
staff,
- Ability to communicate
effectively,
- Self-directed and
self-motivated,
- Ability to meet tight deadlines and adjust
to changing priorities,
- Understanding and experience writing with Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Experience working with Brightedge (SEO solution and content performance marketing platform) a plus,
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in marketing, communications or related field.
- Four years of related experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five recent years working in team-oriented environments.
- Two or more years with direct management experience.
- Higher education experience is a plus.
