FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY seeks applicants for an open rank, tenure-track position within the Department of Biological Sciences and interfacing with the Tropical Conservation Institute/Institute of the Environment to begin Summer 2023. Applicants must have experience in leading terrestrial, vertebrate wildlife conservation initiatives.

Candidate Profile

  • Terrestrial tropical/sub-tropical vertebrate conservation biologist
  • Proven history of applied research—problem solving, species-conservation focus, novel methodologies (e.g., species recovery, wildlife trade, surveillance, wildlife disease)
  • Proven history of project funding, preferably NGO, philanthropic and govt. agency
  • Proven collaboration record with governing authorities, international NGOs, regulators, like-minded organizations
  • Has interests that complement existing Department of Biological Sciences, Institute of Environment and TCI research projects and initiatives.

The ideal candidate will exhibit an interdisciplinary approach to research and the translation of research results into applied conservation and/or policy changes, which will complement existing expertise within the Department of Biology and allied science departments as well as within the Institute of Environment, an FIU Preeminent Program.

Experience in managing multi-institutional, international collaborations for conservation actions and research including data collection and analysis is expected. Experience in international negotiations between governments, as a mediator for implementing sustainable management and policy change, in addition to knowledge and execution of effective policy campaigns, are considered assets. Other areas of interest may include invasive species, illegal wildlife trade including assessment methods and the development of programs and technological tools to help enforce and combat illegal trade, as well as One Health projects, wildlife health research, monitoring and disease control.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop independent research and applied conservation projects with a focus on the conservation and recovery of critically endangered species of terrestrial vertebrates , related to the mission of the Tropical Conservation Institute (http://tci.fiu.edu), and must have a consistent record of grantsmanship and ability to fundraise, in particular from private foundations.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Biological S ciences. Candidates should have a solid record of peer-reviewed publications, extensive professional, research, and teaching experience.
