Job Description:

Basic Function and Responsibilities:

Under general supervision, provide direct assistance to individual student-athletes and teams, with goals of enhancing student success, academic performance and personal and academic skills development. Guide active student athletes and prospective student athletes in the Athletic Office, reflecting both accurate understanding of policy and procedures and supportive communication skills. Provide support to the Athletic Department through research of athletic issues and by coordinating athletic program initiatives and projects.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide guidance and direction focused on helping new, continuing, and returning student athletes develop academic objectives and plans that fulfill the student's personal goals, fulfills NJCAA athletic eligibility and NCAA/NAIA transfer requirements in conjunction with the part time Athletic Academic Advisor.
  • Monitor the progress of student-athletes who have been identified to be in need of special academic support, or who are at risk of failing to meet academic expectations.
  • Maintain compliance with National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) rules and regulations.
  • Research, compile and analyze athletic eligibility information of student athletes notifying the Director and/or designated coach or faculty member of any irregularities or possible conflicts.
  • Guide and direct student-athletes to take full advantage of the many support services available to Oakton students, and encourage close interaction with faculty, advisors and Learning Center staff.
  • Coordinate academic and life skills instruction to individual student-athletes and to athletic teams (e.g. workshops).
  • Provide support to under-prepared students with opportunities and resources to succeed and improve college readiness through workshops and individual or group training activities. Coordinate mandatory study table activities for individual teams and at-risk students.
  • Coordinate Student Athlete Status Reports and monitor student course progress during the semester. As required, the Specialist will also initiate intervention activities or referral with students and coaches as necessary.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with offices across campus to schedule workshops and lectures addressing academic achievement, career development, and personal development, as well as community service and specific issues such as diversity, alcohol abuse, or hazing.
    In conjunction with the Student Financial Aid Office, coordinate issuance of Letter's of Intent and monitor athletic scholarships.
  • Interpret and explain college policies and procedures including; admission, financial aid, registration, academic records, payment, placement testing, counseling, and academic advising processes. Knowledge of other departments and areas around campus in order to serve as a campus resource for students and potential students.
  • Communicate with student athletes, their families/guardians, coaches, athletic administrators, and other people as necessary concerning academic and personal issues within professional guidelines, college policies and procedures and state and federal law including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • Assist with development, implementation, and evaluation of Athletic Department programs and initiatives. Provide suggestions and leadership to enhance the delivery of athletic department services, budget development, fundraising and professional development activities for Athletic Department staff and coaches.
  • Participate in outreach activities between the college athletic department and district high schools including site visits and public relations activities. This position would also work with the Student Recruitment and Outreach Office to participate in high school visits and student recruitment.
  • As needed, assist with the operation and maintenance of the Fitness Center.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Qualifications and Working Conditions:
  • A Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Two years of experience in academic advising or related area preferred.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR/AED.
  • Prior playing experience as an intercollegiate athlete, coach or in academic support services at a college or university setting is required with playing/work experience at Oakton Community College preferred.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to deliver services in an environment with an emphasis on academic success are required.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA eligibility rules and NCAA/NAIA transfer rules is preferred.
  • Must have a high level of oral and written communication skills and to be able to regularly interpret college policies in situations requiring judgment, writing proposals and promotional materials.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • General office environment. Little or no exposure to adverse working conditions.

Additional Information:

HOURS: Monday - Friday 8:15 am - 5:00 pm Hours may vary due to the needs of the College

SALARY: $54,712

Based on the needs of the college and with Administrator approval, some positions at the college may have hybrid schedule options available after 30 working days. .
