Instructor, Lecturer, Clinical-track Assistant Professor in Veterinary Dentistry
Full-time or part-time, 51% - 100% (12-month basis)

Requirements: The successful candidate must have a DVM degree or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with AVDC certification, advanced degree(s), and/or prior research training. Alternatively, candidates with an interest in pursuing an alternative pathway program in veterinary dentistry are encouraged to apply.

Duties: The successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical service in veterinary dentistry and oral surgery, contribute to the clinical instruction of interns and veterinary students, and communicate with clients and referring veterinarians. Teaching responsibilities will include didactic, small group and laboratory instruction of veterinary and graduate students. The University of Illinois Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a full service facility with a newly equipped dental suite, complete with four high-speed dental delivery systems, suction, two indirect digital dental radiographic systems, light-speed endodontic system, Synthes titanium mini-plating system, and an extensive supply of hand instrumentation. The dental service has a dedicated $500,000 endowment to help support dental teaching and research. Additional on-site services include computed tomography, MRI, and intraoperative fluoroscopy. A state-of-the-art dental laboratory is available for teaching and research purposes and is equipped with eight high-speed delivery systems, digital dental radiography, an extensive supply of hand instruments, computers and a large wall mounted screen. This laboratory is also available for small group CE programs. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in clinically relevant or basic science research projects. Candidates interested in collaborative research will find ample opportunities within the University of Illinois. Percent of time dedicated to teaching, scholarly activities, and clinical service will be based on the successful candidate’s appointment title.

The Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine features modern research and animal care facilities. The successful applicant will be responsible for instruction of students throughout the professional veterinary curriculum. As the program progresses that expectation is that residents and graduate students training will be expected in addition to a program of research discovery. Faculty and staff provide broad public engagement through operation of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a regional primary and referral care center for delivery of state-of-the-art veterinary medical services. Through its academic sections, faculty members in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine conduct discovery, instruction, and service relevant to companion animals; horses; food and fiber animals; exotic, wildlife and zoological species. We are dedicated not only to animal health and welfare, but to improvement of human and environmental well-being through improved understanding of the human-animal bond, food production systems and ecosystem health.

Professional opportunities: The University of Illinois is one of the premier public research universities in the country, known for its uniquely multidisciplinary collaborative research environment. The College of Veterinary Medicine boasts an expert faculty with diverse and complementary interests. Most faculty are actively engaged in veterinary education and research. There are NIH-funded research programs, notably in the areas of reproductive biology and toxicology, oncology, stem cell therapy, and viral, bacterial, parasitic, and fungal infectious disease. Residency programs encompass most veterinary clinical specialties as well as pharmacologic, pathologic, and toxicologic fields. As part of the flagship campus of the University of Illinois, the veterinary faculty enjoys many opportunities to collaborate with researchers in such biomedical fields as chemistry, nanotechnology, and bioengineering on newly emerging solutions to the world’s health problems. The College of Veterinary Medicine faculty have become active in the new Carle College of Medicine on the University of Illinois campus. These students will secure a dual medicine and engineering degree. As a result, there is growing interest in medical devices and the expanding field of laparoscopic and endoscopic interventional medicine. Faculty also provide extensive service to professional organizations and specialty colleges, federal research review boards, college and university governance, and public education venues. The College maintains a full-service 230,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art hospital for farm, companion, and exotic animals that supports, engages, and advances the teaching and research activities of the college. In 2009, the College also established the Chicago Center for Veterinary Medicine, which serves as the College’s headquarters for teaching, and public engagement initiatives in the Chicago area.

We are looking for a candidate who is a strong team player, interested in developing productive research, service, and teaching programs that can integrate with activities of other groups across the UIUC Campus. A motivated candidate will find many opportunities to build a fulfilling and rewarding career.
