Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Human Resources Information Management ( HRIM ) Director provides broad HR data and systems strategic support, including management of process and system improvements for HR across the university. The Director is responsible for the planning, development, implementation and maintenance of the University’s HR systems, applications and supporting processes. The Director serves as a strategic thought partner, with exceptional technological talent. Through deep knowledge of HR systems and processes, along with strong technical knowledge, this position applies sound judgment and discretion consistently to problem solve, ensuring the development and implementation of new systems and processes result in increased productivity, efficiency, and enhanced HR service delivery.

The Director is a hands-on practitioner who works collaboratively to build and execute a technology road map that balances the strategic and operational needs of HR, leveraging a deep understanding of cutting-edge HR processes and systems. The Director has comprehensive responsibility for coordinating decisions about workforce information needs for the campus, ensuring alignment with UNCW’s mission, vision, and values. This position serves as a change agent, promoting innovative business and technology solutions and business intelligence to drive continuous improvement, delivering and implementing efficient and seamless processes for key human resource functions.

The Director serves as the data steward for UNCW’s HR information and is responsible for defining and implementing policies and procedures for the day-to-day operational and administrative management of systems and data — including the intake, storage, processing, and transmission of data, both internally and externally.

The Director is a key member of the HR Leadership Team, partnering closely with HR stakeholders, IT and cross functional teams to design, deliver and support state-of-the-art solutions that lead to an engaged workforce. This role will oversee the successful implementation of various university wide projects as well as providing effective ongoing maintenance and administration.

The Director possesses leadership experience, uses strong interpersonal skills to motivate others to accomplish goals and exceed expectations while fostering a collaborative work environment focused on excellence in customer service and satisfaction. This position employs excellent verbal and written skills to interface seamlessly with internal and external customers. This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Human Resources and manages a team of five HRIM and Salary Administration employees.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in a related field with at least 2 years of related professional experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field with at least 1 year of related professional experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
  • 3 years of experience implementing or supporting Banner or an equivalent ERP system.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills to accomplish work through delegated action or cross-functional work teams or committees.
  • Demonstrated competency in the development and implementation of innovative systems, initiatives, strategies, policies and/or process improvements.
  • Advanced data analysis and reporting skills using tools such as SQL, SSDT, Tableau or PowerBI.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • Degree in IT related field preferred
  • 3 years of progressively responsible administrative and/or supervisory experience in information technology with large, enterprise-level information systems, or other closely related experience.
  • HR experience preferred
  • 3 years of experience implementing and/or supporting HR systems in a Higher Education setting
  • 2 years of management experience
  • 3 years of experience as a business analyst supporting HR applications such as Banner HR or PeopleAdmin
  • Project Management Certification or demonstrated success leading complex projects
  • Proficiency with a variety of technologies used in a large business operation ( SSO, Document Management, electronic forms and workflows etc..), including an understanding of how these technologies intersect with HR applications.
  • Strong knowledge of HR technology, systems, and processes.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations/policy; ability to interpret and apply policy relevant to various areas of HR compliance including, but not limited to, FMLA, ACA, EEO /AA, etc.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence others.
  • Project management skills and ability to work under pressure, multi-task, organize/prioritize work, manage projects from start to finish, and meet deadlines.
  • Detail-orientated skill set with an emphasis on accuracy, coupled with the ability to see the larger picture and create broad-based solutions.
  • Ability to exercise discretion, use good judgment, maintain confidentiality, and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to use analytical and critical thinking skills and a diagnostic approach to problem solving.
