Job Description

Performs the application and maintenance of paint on NAU buildings and structures to ensure a clean and welcoming campus environment. Maintains records of university painting information and prepares maintenance reports with information related to university facilities to be used for recommendations. Removes old finishes and prepares campus surfaces for painting by repairing, sanding, and patching. Prepares and installs signage. This position exists to aid and assist Facility Services' mission to the University by providing superior customer services to the campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology and practice sustainable maintenance and operations.

Internal and External Projects - 70%
  • Apply paints, stains, surface preparatory materials and undercoating materials to a variety of surfaces, as appropriate according to Material Safety Data Sheets within established hazardous materials guidelines.
  • Determines appropriate color for new or replacement applications through consultation with the customer.
  • Maintain existing paint surfaces through matching and tinting of appropriate paint products.
  • Apply protective and decorative coats of paint, varnish, lacquer and/or other related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, equipment, and other structures.
  • Washes, scrapes, sands, torches and/or smoothies interior and exterior surfaces prior to painting, varnishing, lacquering, or applying other related materials.
  • Assist with coordinating building maintenance programs and specialty projects.

Maintenance, Equipment Operation and Safety - 15%
  • Maintains cleanliness and quality condition for all equipment, tools, vehicles, and work areas.
  • Operate compressors, striping machines, sandblasters, spray equipment and other small power equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains drywall, wall texturing and ceiling acoustic texturing.
  • Operate heavy lift equipment including scissors and boom swing stage to heights of 80 feet.
  • Erects various types of scaffolding, staging, ladders, and planks to reach high work area surfaces.
  • Appropriately disposes of paints, stains, preparatory and undercoating materials, and other hazardous matter.
  • Works with various departments across campus to assist with installing signage, creating, and applying graphics, striping athletic play areas, paint irregular surfaces such as parking lots, curbs, and streets according to ADOT, Safety and ADA requirements to meet state and federal regulations.

Administrative Tasks, Customer Service and Training. - 10%
  • Engage in constant communication with leadership and internal and external customers.
  • Comprehensive understanding of customer painting requests to ensure that each customer is well informed and agrees to the schedule.
  • Review all assigned work orders and daily log sheets for accuracy and completion for that day.
  • Follow proper procedures for procurement by turning in all receipts and requisition forms and ensure materials are charged to correct work orders.
  • Estimate accurate quantity of materials needed for a job assigned to minimize waste.
  • Attend trainings for OSHA, asbestos abatement, lead abatement, respirator/fit safety, mold, remediation, and all other necessary trainings.
  • Apply personal responsibility to ensure payroll timesheets and electronic record of absences (eROA) are filled out correctly and submitted timely.

Other - 5%
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Spring and summer painting of crosswalks, ped-ways, and field striping.
  • Snow removal, shoveling and operating snow removal equipment


Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Background Information

This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary

Salary range begins at $41,421. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status

This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
