Job Summary

The Department of Art and Art History has numerous gallery spaces in the Art and Industrial Studies buildings on the SJSU campus. The Gallery Technical Coordinator assists the Gallery Director and the Art and Art History Department Chair with the management, use and operations of the gallery facilities and to help plan, organize and supervise the gallery program for the Department of Art and Art History.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance to students and faculty in relevant gallery and university policies
  • Schedule weekly shows in the exhibition/display areas for Masters of Fine Arts, Bachelors of Fine Arts, and class shows
  • Support the weekly (Tuesdays presently) Night Lecture Series, both in-person and virtually
  • Catalog and archive exhibition documentation and images from student exhibitions and Thompson Gallery events and exhibitions
  • Maintain and develop web presence for exhibitions (may include hiring and training student assistants for creating regular postings, and/or assist with archiving images of related shows and events)
  • Arrange and coordinate artwork in the Thompson Gallery including insurance values and incoming/outgoing condition reports
  • Maintain student gallery storage areas overseeing and completing minor repairs and general maintenance
  • Coordinate loan of tools and materials for student use
  • Maintain Thompson Gallery storage area and installation tools including exhibition displays and digital equipment. Repair and/or fabricate as needed
  • Ensure the safe use of paints, solvents and other hazardous materials and store and organize them safely in approved cabinets
  • Ensure safe ladder usage with yourself and all students and staff members
  • Assist Gallery Director with Non-Monetary In Kind Donations, condition reports, and correspondence with donors for acquisitions in the University Art Collection
  • Manage database of works of art and images
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various media used to create fine works of art and design
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the procedures and practices used in the installation and exhibition of works of art and design
  • Thorough knowledge of the various materials used in the exhibition of works, including paints, plastics, framing materials, glass, flooring, and floor finishes
  • Thorough knowledge of shipping methods, packing and crating methods used in the shipment of works of arts
  • Thorough knowledge of processes used in wall and floor maintenance (painting, sanding, scraping spackling and refinishing)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with power and hand tools
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects and to coordinate the work of others
  • Strong oral communication skills. Must possess excellent customer service and public relations skills
  • Thorough knowledge of the various materials used in the exhibition of works, including paints, plastics, framing materials, glass, flooring and floor finishes
  • Thorough knowledge of processes used in wall and floor maintenance (painting, sanding, scraping spackling and refinishing)
  • Demonstrated ability to work with power and hand tools
  • Demonstrated knowledge of methods, procedures and practices; English grammar, business writing, punctuation and spelling
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format correspondence and reports
  • Working knowledge of software applications; word processing
  • Ability to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse multicultural environment
  • Ability to handle multiple work priorities, organize and plan work and projects and to coordinate the work of others
Required Qualifications
  • A combination of education and experience will be considered
  • Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned
Preferred Qualifications
  • MA or MFA in Art or Design
  • Three (3) years of experience assisting the curation of exhibitions, interacting with artists, agents and the public in planning work of others for project coordinator
  • Minimum of two (2) years of paid preparator experience coordinating, organizing and installing exhibitions


Compensation

Classification: Instructional Support Tech II
Anticipated Hiring Range: $4,957/month - $5,290/month
CSU Salary Range: $4,180/month - $7,254/month

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment.
