Job Description
The Core Humanities Program at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) invites applicants for a Teaching Assistant Professor position to begin 1 July 2023. This is a 9-month, non-tenure-track, continuing position in which faculty are eligible for promotion, and in which the predominant responsibility is teaching. We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated record in teaching excellence to teach at least two of the university's required, interdisciplinary courses on human histories and cultures from ancient times to the present: CH 201: Ancient and Medieval Cultures; CH 202: The Modern World; and CH 203: American Experiences and Constitutional Change. The position carries a 4/4 teaching load, though there may be course release opportunities for administrative duties. Preference will be given to candidates with an interest in and/or experience with program administration who could serve as the next Assistant Director. The duties of the Assistant Director include but are not limited to overseeing the CH Essay Prize; performing classroom observations for term lecturers, adjunct faculty, and Distinguished Teaching Assistants; collecting and reviewing syllabi; and serving on CH committees.
Required Qualifications
- Candidates must possess teaching experience at the college
level and have a PhD in a Humanities discipline (e.g. English,
History, Philosophy, Women's/Gender Studies, World Languages &
Literatures, or related.) in hand by July 1, 2023.
- Demonstrated excellence, or clear evidence of potential for
excellence, in teaching at least two of the three Core Humanities
courses: CH 201: Ancient and Medieval Cultures, CH 202: The Modern
World, and/or CH 203: American Experiences and Constitutional
Change.
- Successful candidates will have an excellent record of teaching
and must demonstrate evidence of attention to diversity, equity,
and inclusion in research, teaching, and/or service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in and/or experience with program administration (the
new hire will have the ability to apply to serve as the Assistant
Director)
- Experience and promise as an excellent teacher
- A track record of campus programming and/or community
engagement
- Experience working with and teaching diverse groups of
students, including evidence of a commitment to a broad involvement
with diversity work on campus
