The Department of Art and Design is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor, tenure­-track position. This position will teach and develop an extensive creative activities and professional agenda in Art Theory and act as director for the Center for Creativity and the Arts (CCA).

The CCA is an important generative part of the creative atmosphere of our campus and serves as a vital nexus point, connecting arts of all forms with our campus and regional community. Linking our campus with international artists and exhibitions important to social concerns, it generates exposure to and involvement in enriching experiences, as well as creating programming that places the University as a destination for local artists and community members.

The Director will provide directorial and managerial oversight by serving as the administrative lead for the CCA and will be responsible for providing operational and financial leadership, strategic programming, program management, developing and maintaining budgets, as well as annual reports. Moreover, they will develop, direct, and enhance educational and public relations programming and visibility with community constituents, as well as position CCA as a leading cultural institution in the Central Valley of California. In addition, the candidate will coordinate the planning and scheduling of programming and exhibitions in the Department of Art, Design, & Art History's gallery spaces including the Phebe Conley Art Gallery, the Dean's Gallery, and the Graduate Studio Gallery at the M Street Arts Complex. As CCA director, the position reports to the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities. Other responsibilities will include serving as a functional leader and articulating key objectives and long-term organizational goals for the CCA in collaboration with board members, advising undergraduate students, participating in program development and accreditation, rendering service to the University (at various levels), the profession of studio art, and/or the community.

The faculty in our department share their knowledge of and appreciation for the arts with our students, the campus, and with our larger community. The position will participate in teaching studio theory classes and act as Coordinator of the Center for Creativity and the Arts (CCA). In connection with the teaching responsibilities, this position will work with the Chair of the Department of Art, Design, and Art History and the department as a whole. Additionally, the successful candidate will be expected to produce a body of research that contributes substantially to the advancement of the department and CAA's mission and vision. Specific assignments are dependent on departmental needs and the background of the individual.

Qualifications:

Required Education (from an accredited institution or foreign equivalent.):

  • PhD, MFA, or other terminal degree in art or related field


  • Required Experience:

  • Substantial professional experience in art gallery curation and management with an emphasis in museum studies, studio art, art history, cultural anthropology, non-profit business / arts administration or a related field, including study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative educational practices, or programs. This is normally achieved with 3 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively and collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, board members, visiting artists, museums, galleries, and other art institutions, and donors
  • Demonstrated abilities and experience teaching art theory at the university level, including ability to engage students in the development of creative activity and critical thinking, as evidenced by the statement of teaching philosophy and teaching record.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working effectively with students, faculty, and staff from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.   • Strong organizational and time-management skills including the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and projects under competing deadlines and maintain flexibility in response to constantly shifting priorities.


  • Preferred Experience :

  • Demonstrated history of successful grant writing, fundraising, and experience in coordinating grant writing and fundraising efforts with multiple institutions.
  • Curatorial experience including exhibition design and planning, effective interaction with contributing artists, organizing the logistics of transportation of art, and insurance arrangement
  • History of planning and provision of leadwork oversight of staff and/or student workers.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills with the ability to effectively present ideas and concepts, including demonstrated ability to generate publicity, announcements, and educational display text for art exhibitions.
  • Strong record of significant and relevant research and scholarship or creative activities in art theory and practice, evidenced by the candidate’s portfolio, exhibitions, professional paper presentations, and/or peer reviewed publications/materials accepted for publication.
