Job Description:

SUNY Schenectady County Community College's Office of Student Affairs seeks a full-time Counselor. Reporting to the Director of Wellness and Support Services, the Counselor provides personal counseling services to students and to others in the college community on an individual and/or group basis. The Counselor is also responsible for providing related referral and consultation services. This position participates in the Division of Student Affairs and the Academic Senate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides personal counseling in regard to human development, personal growth, and success in college
  • Provides crisis intervention support and referral
  • Provides learning experiences related to wellness and personal growth through class presentations, workshops, group work, or training sessions
  • Participates in collaborative relationships with various College departments for the enrichment of student development
  • Establishes and maintains liaisons with community agencies to facilitate referrals
  • Provides relevant classroom instruction as needed
  • Utilizes related technology-based systems (BANNER, Starfish, LMS, etc.)
  • Participates in recruitment, retention, and orientation activities


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Counseling or Social Work
  • Must possess LMHC, LMSW or LCSW at time of hire OR possess and/or agree to apply for a NYS LMHC Limited Permit and obtain full licensure within 36 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience in counseling preferred
  • Experience in a community college setting working directly with students
  • Knowledge of the laws that pertain to providing counseling services and maintaining student records
  • Ability to interview clients, assist in analyzing problems and developing appropriate coping strategies
  • Excellent communication and intrapersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people of all ages, cultures and backgrounds
  • Ability to develop and implement related programs, services and activities.
  • A commitment to providing services in accordance with the stated mission, goals, objectives and priorities of the College
  • Working knowledge in technology-based systems (BANNER, Starfish, etc.)
