Plans and conducts basic experiments to meet research project objectives, with close supervision. Assists in performing laboratory experiments and clinical studies for product or material formulation and development. Daily management of laboratory tools, documentations and processes to ensure regulatory compliance and timely completion of project/program deliverables.

Job Description

The research specialist will work with a multidisciplinary team on ongoing research projects using mouse and cell models in addition to human
biospecimens to investigate the genetics of liver metabolism and cardiometabolic diseases. The research specialist reports to the PI to ensure
timely and accurate data collection and management. They will also work with collaborative senior laboratory personnel regarding the procedures and techniques to be followed in conducting research and recommend modifications as needed.

The research specialist will be responsible for collecting and analyzing data that may include performing biochemical assays using complex
equipment; assisting with animal testing, surgeries, and sample/tissue collection; preparing samples and submitting to Core facilities for additional processing; maintaining excellent records or all procedures and experiments including data analyses and performing some support tasks including maintaining mouse colony inventory and ordering lab supplies.

The research specialist reports to the PI to ensure timely and accurate data collection and management. The research specialist will be responsible for conducting laboratory experiments; collecting data; documenting protocols and procedures; assisting with administrative duties (supply ordering, mouse colony records). They will collaborate with Senior Research Specialists, Postdoctoral Fellows, Graduate Students and Principal Investigators (PI) on experimental workflows to ensure regulatory compliance and timely completion of project/program deliverables.

Job Responsibilities
1) Design and perform laboratory experiments
  • Write experimental protocols
  • Prepare supplies and reagents for procedures
  • Conducts experiments
  • Process samples to submit to Core facilities and/or collaborators

    2) Data collection, organization and analysis
  • Record all experimental procedures and data
  • Analyze and graph results, report findings, discuss interpretations and plan next steps

    3) Administrative support
  • Order supplies and reagents
  • Maintain mouse colony records

    4) Perform additional duties as assigned

    Bachelor's Degree and 0 to 1 year of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Course work in
    Biology/Biochemistry/Nutrition and laboratory experience is preferred but not required. Ability to work independently with attention to detail.
    Strong PC skills in MS office and related databases. Good communication skills and ability to meet deadlines is essential. High motivation
    and desire to improve on both the technical and scholarship level is also critical.

    This Lab provides essential 24/7 services for the University of
    Pennsylvania. The Research Specialist A position is designated as "essential" and you are expected to work when normal campus operations
    are suspended (e.g.: inclement weather) or if there is an emergency impacting the School of Nursing. In addition, you may be expected to
    work outside of your regular schedule during peak activity periods (e.g.: overtime, weekends). To the extent possible, managers will provide
    timely notice of modified work schedules.

    Salary offers are made based on the candidate's qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
