Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of Dance beginning in the Fall 2023 academic year. We seek candidates who are currently active in artistic, intellectual, and physical pursuits within their areas of practice in the field of Dance.The successful candidate will teach studio practice/technique courses in the area of traditional and/or contemporary modern dance techniques with a strong foundation in Somatic practices. We seek a candidate that will bring technical expertise and teach sound conditioning practices for the dancer/performer in the pursuit of safe technique practice and injury prevention.The candidate should expect to teach two or more theory courses such as Music for Dancers, Dance Production, Dance History, World Dance, Dance Theory, Dance Philosophy/Criticism, Modern Dance, Introduction to Dance, and/or theory courses related to their creative work/research. The candidate will enhance the strengths of the current faculty through excellence in teaching, mentoring, and supervising students across various expressions of dance performance and/or creative research. The Dance Department seeks a candidate with strong organizational and leadership skills, combined with the ability to foster collegiality and collaborative initiatives both within our dance department and the Rio Grande Valley community.
Successful candidates will pursue a national and international research agenda, including choreography or performance, publications, and conference presentations, among other activities. Teaching responsibilities include training and preparing dancers in all three undergraduate programs, BA, BFA, and Teacher Certification programs. Candidates will contribute to the mentorship, review, and assessment of capstone projects; teach studio courses in their area of dance practice; develop new courses; and participate in shared governance through committee service, and Dance Department project initiatives as required.

Department/College Background:
The Dance Department at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is a diverse, exciting, and the multicultural department that offers BFA in Dance, BFA in Dance (Mexican Folk Dance Concentration), BA in Dance (Teacher Certification), and a BA in Dance. The Dance Department provides students with the opportunity to prepare for a variety of dance careers, offering both a broad base of study and the opportunity for more intensive work in areas of specific interest.

The multicultural emphasis of the degree program makes it unique among most dance degree-program offering a curriculum of technique classes in Ballet, Modern, Mexican Folklorico, and Flamenco. The certified teacher preparation specialty prepares dance educators who are trained in the technique, choreography, and instructional methods in a wide array of dance techniques that are aligned with the cultural heritage of the area. The Dance Department has approximately 70 declared majors and numerous dance minors and is currently undergoing initial accreditation with the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Dance from an accredited institution.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.
