Associate or Full Professor in Nursing and Department Chair of Nursing

Responsibilities: 

Administrative

• Reports directly to the Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Education (SHSE). 
• Meets faculty responsibilities as delineated in the university and department faculty handbooks.
• Assumes leadership responsibilities in contributing to the development, implementation, and evaluation of the philosophy, mission, objectives, and policies of the Nursing Department.
• Assumes leadership responsibilities in the planning and implementation of the total curriculum.
• Participates in the recruitment and retention of students.
• Initiates and provides faculty orientation and development program.
• Provides input in the selection of faculty.
• Utilizes Watson’s Caring Theory in personal and professional interactions.
• With input from faculty, plans and administers the annual Nursing budget.
• Collaborates with and coordinates activities with local and regional health care systems.
• Provides input in the selection of faculty.
• Serves as an advisory member to all Departmental standing committees and participates actively in the faculty organization.
• Represents the Department in appropriate administrative meetings, projecting the needs of the Department in relation to the SHSE, University, state, and region.
• Receives and responds to correspondence specific to the Department, referring it as necessary to appropriate persons.
• Represents the Department in legislative, legal, and public relations activities.
• Facilitates the Nursing Advisory Council.
• Prepares reports as required by the University, state, and professional organizations.
• Implements the evaluation program, prepares reports of findings, and recommends changes if necessary, based on findings.
• Is responsible for developing plans to maintain appropriate accreditation.
• Completes other assignments related to the quality of nursing education in the Department, SHSE, and University.

Curriculum

• With the assistance of faculty, is committed to maintaining the quality of the undergraduate curriculum.
• Recommends proposed curriculum changes to appropriate bodies.
• Coordinates arrangements with other schools in the University offering supportive or related courses.
• With the assistance of nursing faculty, develops, implements, maintains, and evaluates the Department in relation to the mission, philosophy, objectives, and graduate competencies of the Department.
• In consultation with the faculty organization, recommends affiliations with clinical agencies for student learning experiences.

Faculty Development

• Recruits and recommends appointment of nursing faculty to the Dean of SHSE, Provost, and the President.
• Assigns teaching responsibilities to appropriate faculty.
• Orients and advises new faculty in the Department.
• Evaluates nursing faculty and staff.
• Facilitates opportunities for development and growth of individual nursing faculty.

Teaching, Advising, Scholarship, and Service: Meets faculty requirements in accordance with rank.

Required Qualifications:

• General: Meets faculty requirements for rank.
• Demonstrates expert nursing knowledge base. Thorough knowledge of specific area of expertise.
• Current unrestricted license to practice as a registered nurse in Missouri or other state and eligible to apply in Missouri, with at least two years of relevant clinical experience.
• Demonstrates leadership ability.
• Experience in curriculum development (academic setting preferred.)
• Professional involvement at the state, regional, and national level.
• Education: Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Nursing with related experience, Doctorate Degree preferred.
• Meets Missouri State Board of Nursing standards for the administrator of a baccalaureate nursing program.

• Demonstrates initiative and judgment in planning and presenting course material.
• Demonstrates initiative in planning student experience, including responsiveness to individualized students’ experiential needs.
• Demonstrates skill at initiating and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships.
• Demonstrates ability to use critical thinking for problem solving.
• Demonstrates respect for diversity.
• Facilitate or demonstrate leadership in conflict resolution when required.
