Position Purpose

Under general supervision, perform a variety of tasks in support of Research and Laboratory Safety Programs with a focus on chemical inventory and adherence to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration ( OSHA ) lab standard. Work with laboratory personnel to integrate chemical safety into all lab operations and promote safe work practices.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, safety, or another scientific related field.
  • At least two to four years’ relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of chemistry, research science, or occupational safety with a high level of interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate protective equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to develop and deliver safety training.
  • Maintain a valid US or Canadian driver’s license and the ability to qualify as an Approved Driver under Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Well organized with the ability to follow directions with minimal oversight.
  • Professional certifications in the EHS field or other relevant disciplines.
  • Maturity, good judgement, and poise in potentially stressful situations.
  • Familiarity with and confidence handling chemicals and hazardous waste.

Key Accountabilities

Description

Chemical Inventory Management
  • Receive, barcode, and audit chemicals.
  • Perform annual chemical inventory reconciliation and obtain/maintain Safety Data Sheets ( SDS ) as needed.
  • Provide back up support to the Laboratory Resource Center ( LRC ) through liaison with the Procurement department.
  • Identify and track highly hazardous/flammable chemicals on campus. Identify training requirements.

  • Train faculty, staff, and students regarding the use of the chemical inventory system & laboratory safety.
  • Provide laboratory, safety compliance, and standard operating procedure support to faculty and staff.

Research and Laboratory Safety
  • Work with the Research Safety Officers in conducting laboratory safety inspections and follow up.
  • Respond to emergency incidents and perform small chemical spill clean-up.
  • Collect hazardous waste from laboratories as needed.
