Position Purpose

Under minimal supervision by the Residential Operations Facilities Manager, performs a wide range of steam/pipe fitting, process piping, plumbing/heating assignments, including layout and assembly, related to the installation, renovation, maintenance, and repair of various piping systems in college central steam distribution, building hydronic systems, within the Residential Operations building portfolio. Installs, modifies and repairs utility, supply and return systems, fixtures, fittings, and equipment such as steam, condensate, traps, domestic water, compressed air, vacuum and acid waste systems, water closets, water heaters, hydrants, valves, steam meters, and all plumbing systems. Lays out, assembles, installs, and maintains all piping systems and pipe sizes, and pipe supports for steam, hot water, heating and and cooling systems. This includes expansion joints, pressure reducing stations, relief valves, isolation valves, steam control valves, condensate pumps, flanges, fittings, gaskets.

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Eight- to 10 years of relevant experience; or the equivalent.
  • Graduate of a technical schooling with plumbing training preferred.
  • High School graduate.
  • Plumbing license required.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and be qualified under the terms of the
  • Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Policy.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of how various piping systems are installed and operate.
  • High degree of skill in maintaining, operating and repairing piping systems.
  • Knowledge of how various disposal and utility systems and equipment are installed and operate.
  • Knowledge of the fabrication of piping and applicable joining methods.
  • Ability to interpret and apply building plans and blueprints.
  • Ability to plan and layout the installation, modification, and repair of various systems and equipment.
  • Skill in the installation of piping.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment such as plumb bobs,drills, torches, pipe threaders, pipe bending tools and machines, and drain augers.
  • Understanding of national pipe codes.
  • Willingness to provide small hand-tools appropriate to the trade and to take full responsibility for completion of the work according to trade standards.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.
  • Must have successfully completed the following training prior to performing work to which the training relates:

Description
  • Maintains and repairs central steam distribution system, building hydronic systems, sanitary plumbing systems, compressed air, process piping, vacuum-, acid waste-, swimming pools and other specialized systems.
  • Plans and lays-out work involving the installation and modification of plumbing and piping systems and equipment, utilizing blueprints or lay-out sketches when provided.
  • Determines work methods, supplies, and tools and plans working details to accomplish work assignments.
  • Plans needed routing and support of systems, with understanding of steam flow.
  • Inspects work site to determine presence of obstructions and to ascertain that holes cut for pipes will not cause structural weakness.
  • Selects type and size of pipe and related materials (a variety of metal and non-metal pipes, tubes and fittings including iron, steel, copper, and plastic) and equipment such as supports and hangers according to specifications.
  • Cuts pipes, using saws, pipe cutter, hammer and chisel, cutting torch and pipe cutting machines. Threads and bends pipes.
  • Connects pipes, using threaded, soldered, caulked, brazed, fused, ProPress or cemented joints.
  • Secures pipe to structure with brackets, clamps, and hangers.

  • Places and connects air, manufactured gas, sewage and water fixtures and facilities such as water mains, lavatories, sinks, stoves and air compression equipment.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs or replaces steam lines, valves, radiators, heaters, storage tanks, steam tables, sterilizers, steam traps, control valves, fittings, expansion joints, steam pressure cookers, etc.
  • Installs steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains reducing valves and stations, condensate pumps, and expansion joints.
  • Checks steam systems for malfunction, leaks and defects in equipment; makes necessary repairs.
  • Cleans difficult stoppages in drainpipes inside buildings.
  • Inspects and tests piping after the completion of repairs or alterations.

  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, kneeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing up to 80 pounds.
  • Work is performed indoors, outdoors. in bad weather, in areas that are abnormally hot, dirty, or dusty while installing, repairing, and insulating underground steam lines, in hot underground steam manholes.
  • Is exposed to the possibility of burns from hot water and steam while repairing leaks in high pressure steam lines.
  • Is subject to strains, cuts, and bruises while working with on heavy pipes.
  • Work involves wearing special or protective clothing such as aprons or overalls, gloves, goggles, ear plugs.
  • Works in unsanitary conditions such as sewer manholes.
