Director, Strategic Technology Initiatives
Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of the CIO, the Director of Strategic Technology Initiatives will build and lead the college’s technology research and development function. In partnership with the College’s Vice Chancellor of Strategic Initiatives, the director will also be responsible for designing, building and maintaining the technology environments supporting strategic partnerships between ACCD and partner companies and organizations. The director will be responsible for liaising between technology teams within the college’s IT department, broader stakeholder groups at the college, and representatives from partnering organizations.
This position functions within a department that uses an IT as a Business (ITaaB) model and aligns with the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) framework. As such, the director will be expected to embrace and work within an IT Service Management (ITSM) model. The successful candidate must be business savvy and also be a well-rounded technologist. The director must have knowledge spanning the gamut of the technology space, including: technology infrastructure, software development, data management, technology architecture principles, electronic security and information security.

Description of Duties and Tasks
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Contributing to the development of enterprise-level contractual
agreements between ACCD and potential partner organizations.
- Acting as a subject matter expert (SME) for a broad range of
technology-related considerations.
- Recommending and assessing recommendations for technology
environment architecture.
- Recommending and assessing recommendations for specific
technologies and solution stacks.
- Designing new environments for the purpose of deploying new
technologies, or testing the use of existing technologies in new
operational applications.
- Coordinating the building, testing and deployment of technology
environments in collaboration with implementation resources and
project managers following formal Project Management Institute
(PMI) standards.
- Establishing and maintaining professional relationships with
business and technical counterparts representing partner
institutions.
- Ensuring supported environments and service levels are
maintained according to established agreements and in accordance
with ACCD standards; inducing but not limited to architecture and
security standards.
- Capturing, formalizing and leading the implementation of
changes to the technology aspects of established agreements and
their corresponding environments or solutions.
- Establishing and articulating the need for required staff to
accomplish objectives.
- Building teams of employees or contingent workers as needed to
support various initiatives.
- Supervising, training, coaching, directing, coordinating, and
discipling personnel while adhering to organizational human
resource policies and procedures, as well as related employment
laws.
- Recommending hire and termination for positions
supervised.
- Assisting in developing Strategic Roadmaps as needed.
- Setting high-level priorities and direction for teams
supervised.
- Providing high level costs/analysis on complex requirements and
making recommendations.
- Maintaining current knowledge of trends in technology and a
working knowledge of newer technologies. This may require travel to
attend training sessions, conferences and other interactions.
- Working with existing IT team members to achieve project goals
and maintain operational service levels.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proven track record of successful project delivery in rapidly
evolving and complex organizational environments
- Extensive knowledge and competency with modern computing system
tools including Microsoft Server, Linux, SQL, VMWare, file shares,
storage solutions, etc.
- High level of knowledge and competency in Infrastructure as a
Service and connectivity with public and private cloud
solutions
- Knowledge of the principles of networks and telecom
- Knowledge of the principles of physical, electronic and logical
security and access management
- Knowledge of the principles and best-practices of application
hosting, application development, high availability and application
security
- Knowledge of the principles of information security
- Skilled at managing high levels of complexity
- Knowledge of ITIL, PMI Project Management methodologies
- Must be highly motivated, innovative and willing to always
bring new ideas to the table
- Must have the ability to maintain an established work
schedule
- Effectively using interpersonal and communications skills
including tact and diplomacy
- Effectively using organizational and planning skills with
attention to detail and follow-through
- Maintaining confidentiality of work-related information and
materials
- Establishing and maintaining effective working
relationships
- 7 years related work experience
- 3 or more years experience leading technology teams
- 3 years experience working on technology-related service
contracts
- 7 or more years of related work experience in technology
infrastructure.
- 5 or more years of experience with designing physical and
virtual technology environments.
- 5 or more years of related work experience in software
development, application architecture or data architecture.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related
field
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or related
field
- ITIL Foundation Certification or higher
- Must have a valid driver's license
