The Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) ( invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor eligible for tenure in the area of Construction Management and Engineering beginning in Fall 2023. Candidates with exceptional qualifications may be considered for the rank of tenured associate professor. The Durham School is co-located in two cities, Lincoln and Omaha, which are approximately 50 miles apart. With approximately 30 faculty, 500 undergraduate students, and 100 graduate students, the Durham School is the only endowed academic unit ($30 million) in the UNL College of Engineering and has strong ties with several world-class construction firms, including Black & Veatch, Hensel Phelps, JE Dunn, Kiewit, McCarthy, Turner, Weitz, Whiting-Turner and many others. Currently, the UNL College of Engineering is building a new $115 million teaching facility named Kiewit Hall that will serve as engineering’s academic hub and house the school’s construction programs in Lincoln beginning in spring 2024 (

This position is expected to be based in Lincoln and to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Durham School; conduct original impactful research; actively participate in service, outreach, and community engagement; and demonstrate a commitment to excellence in all areas of the university mission.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in construction management, construction engineering, or a closely related field. They will have a strong record of scholarly achievement that is commensurate with the desired rank and a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching and participating in collaborative activities across disciplines. Candidates must also demonstrate readiness to advance inclusive excellence and diversity, as these are core values in our school, college, and university. Candidates for the rank of assistant professor will have the potential for establishing sustained externally funded research, while candidates for the rank of associate professor will have a strong record of publications and externally funded research.

Successful candidates are expected to teach courses in at least two of the following areas: infrastructure resiliency; virtual design and construction; project delivery methods; heavy construction; project risk analysis; or sustainability in construction.

Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to contributing to a culture that supports diversity and inclusion.

Preference will be given to candidates with research expertise in at least one of the following areas: sustainability and resiliency of the built environment (e.g., under extreme climate conditions); or emerging technologies (e.g., smart sensing, robotics, machine learning, technology-human interaction, fabrication) to revolutionize construction, operation, or workforce development. For the rank of associate professor, preferred candidates are expected to have well-established research programs and successful experience leading interdisciplinary research teams.


Numerous opportunities for collaborations across the University of Nebraska exist, including with the Nebraska Transportation Center and Midwest Roadside Safety Facility; the Nebraska Center for Materials and Nanoscience; Nebraska Innovation Campus; and other state and federally-funded research centers and programs. Faculty at the University of Nebraska have access to many resources, including the Holland Computing Center, which manages supercomputing facilities.
