The School of Social Transformation, an interdisciplinary unit at Arizona State University (http://sst.asu.edu), invites applications for a full-time instructor position in Women and Gender Studies. We seek a candidate with a Ph.D. in Women and Gender Studies or related field by the time of appointment and demonstrated excellence in teaching.

 

 

 

The successful candidate will have a typical teaching load of 4 courses per semester. Essential functions include teaching interdisciplinary courses at the undergraduate and graduate level; preparing syllabi; potentially preparing new course designs; evaluating student work; mentoring students; and holding office hours. The successful candidate will be expected to teach core courses as well as high enrollment special topics courses and courses at the graduate level. The candidate will also teach in a variety of modalities.

 

 

 

This is an academic-year 2023-2024 appointment with an expected start date of Fall 2023. This is a full- time, benefits-eligible, non-tenure eligible position renewable on an academic year basis contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university.

 

 

 

 

 

About the Women and Gender Studies program

 

 

 

A hallmark of the Women and Gender Studies program at ASU is our emphasis, at all levels, on intersectionality theory and praxis including in curricular design, course design/syllabus construction and pedagogies, and student recruitment and engagement. In undergraduate and graduate courses, faculty teach about the intersections of social locations in the US and transnationally in ways that emphasize the contributions of Black feminist thought, women of color feminisms, queer of color critique, and transnational feminisms.

 

 

 

Women and Gender Studies offers several degree options at undergraduate and graduate levels, including: in-person BA; online BA; undergraduate minor; in-person MA; online MA (first cohort, Fall 2023); in-person PhD and graduate certificate. Our courses are offered in all modalities (in-person, 100% online and hybrid).

 

 

 

 

 

About the School of Social Transformation

 

 

 

The School of Social Transformation (SST) was founded in 2009, bringing together diverse scholars, students and communities in African and African American Studies, Asian Pacific American studies, social and cultural pedagogy, justice and social inquiry, and women and gender studies. As one of many transdisciplinary schools unique to Arizona State University, SST focuses on transformational knowledge, including creative research approaches to themes and questions embedded in broader historical, social and cultural contexts. SST is home to 46 tenure/tenure-track and 13 non-tenure eligible faculty members that serve 600+ undergraduate majors and over 100+ doctoral and masters-level students in 19 graduate programs spanning an array of research areas. SST faculty represent humanities, social sciences, and interdisciplinary fields (including creative arts), and they are distinguished nationally and internationally for their scholarship. The faculty trains students to think, do research and teach in more complex ways about race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, social and economic justice, immigration status, and labor; to be accountable to the communities with which they engage; and to foreground social transformation on local, national, and global levels. The school’s location in Arizona, where demographic changes and social issues reflect the challenges taking place nationally, especially highlights the relevance of the school’s mission.

Minimum Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in Women and Gender Studies or relevant fields by the time of appointment. A demonstrated excellence in teaching.

 

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience teaching core courses within the Women and Gender Studies curriculum. Demonstrated experience teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level. Demonstrated experience with new course design. Demonstrated experience teaching in a variety of modalities. Demonstrated excellence in mentoring students. Demonstrated experience to teach both small and large enrollment courses.
