Pellissippi State Community College is one of 40 institutions in the Tennessee Board of Regents system. Position Summary: This role will provide leadership, strategic planning, support and supervision to the Health Sciences department. Working in support of the mission and goals of the College, the Dean will be responsible to the Vice President of Academic Affairs for all academic, personnel, and budget concerns in the Department of Health Sciences. This position will work in collaboration with other departments within the division and the college as well as external stakeholders as required.

Essential Functions:

20% Ensure continued quality and integrity of department programs and courses. Facilitate accreditation, program review, and academic audit activities; provide required reports/responses. Oversee the curriculum development process, including facilitating the development and maintenance of course syllabi and updating departmental curricula.

15% Maintain accreditation standards established by state and national accrediting agencies.

10% Recruit, select, orient, supervise, observe, and evaluate performance of faculty and staff; make recommendations for retention and/or promotion/tenure of departmental personnel.

10% Perform varied administrative duties as necessary, including attending meetings, holding meetings, and interacting with other departments and divisions of the College, TBR, and the community.

10% Ensure classes are scheduled and staffed in departmental program areas on all campuses to meet student needs.

5% Mediate and address student, faculty, and staff concerns and conflicts.

5% Provide leadership in budget development, grant procurement and implementation, resource management and strategic and operational planning and assessment.

5% Serve as facilitator for department faculty/staff and as a liaison between faculty/staff and administration to maintain a communication system that involves faculty in the decision-making process.

5% Facilitate graduation by reviewing transcripts and intent to graduate applications; assisting in awarding transfer credit, course substitutions, credit for life experience, credit by exam, and prior learning assessment.

5% Provide leadership and support for relevant professional development. Participate in professional development and organizations as relevant.

5% Serve as liaison between college and clinical agencies.

5% Teach in area of competence according to college policy—one course per academic year.

Job Requirements:

· Masters in Nursing or other Health Sciences related discipline

· Years of Experience : One to two years supervisory experience and a minimum of five years’ teaching experience at the college level.

· Ability to work with departmental faculty and other constituents of the community and college on matters of curriculum development and evaluation.

· Ability to maintain an environment of respect among students, faculty and staff.

· Demonstrated evidence of the administrative, leadership, and interpersonal skills needed to manage a department.

· Maturity and initiative required to lead department through necessary changes in delivery and technology in response to TBR mandates and student needs.

· No second language is required.

All employees are expected to engage in strategic institutional efforts related to diversity, equity, and inclusion of marginalized students.

Magnitude of Impact:

The dean has full responsibility for department outcomes which impact all faculty and staff within the department, and potentially the students enrolled in department courses. Intervention of problematic decisions would occur at the level of vice-president or higher.

Responsibility for Accuracy:

Scheduling time room conflicts and writing contracts

These errors are reviewed by Instructional Services or Records personnel. Overall, this is a difficult question to answer because there is also the potential for serious errors in judgment regarding personnel or communication of student information, which could result in a lawsuit.

Financial Impact:

The dean is responsible for overseeing the spending of the department’s operating budget and for annual inventory checks of equipment used by department members.

Budgetary:

· Position has authority related to budgets within department.

· Relative to payroll, position designates wages for departmental adjunct faculty and contract workers, based on college formulas and creates and submits relative contractual documents for these positions.

Judgement and Decisions:

Scheduling; staffing; hiring and retention of adjunct faculty; appointment of program coordinator and committee members; transfer credit and course substitutions; support or non-support of promotion and tenure of full-time faculty; section overloads; adding or cancelling sections based on enrollment numbers. Most of these decisions are independent.

Nature of Contacts:

The dean is in frequent contact with personnel all across the college—from the physical plant to the President. In addition, deans interact with the public at open houses and other college functions.

Leadership: This position directly supervises 15-21 people

Physical Demands:

· The job requires physical stamina for some 12-to 15-hour days.

· The person in this position frequently communicates in meetings and in interactions with faculty, staff, and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Frequent computer use and reading, sometimes on paper that involves rows and columns f numbers which requires the ability to inspect, assess, and estimate.
