Job Details

The Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology (BCET) at Old Dominion University (ODU) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor rank to begin in Fall 2023. We seek exceptional candidates with strong research track in Mission Engineering. Appointment will be with the in any of the six departments in the college.

Mission engineering has its origins within the U.S. Department of Defense. As defined by the DoD, mission engineering is “the deliberate planning, analyzing, organizing, and integrating of current and emerging operational and system capabilities to achieve desired warfighting mission effects.” The DoD also defines mission to be “the task, together with the purpose, that clearly indicates the action to be taken and the reason thereby.” Old Dominion University has a strong history in supporting the DoD, including its directive to fully integrate mission engineering within their operations. ODU is building on this and will quickly establish itself as the national leader in mission engineering workforce development and applied research, including the adaptation and implementation of mission engineering into other, nonmilitary domains that also require the integration of multiple linked systems to achieve desired end states.

The successful candidate is expected to perform teaching, research, and service, and must demonstrate an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

  1. Earned or will receive by May 2023 a doctoral degree in Engineering, or other closely related fields.
  2. Capability to establish a strong research record in Mission Engineering
  3. Aptitude to publish in peer-reviewed journal publications and secure externally funded research.
  4. Ability to teach core courses in the one of the six BCET departments.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred candidates should have substantial expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas (not in the order of preference): Department of Defense acumen, integration of multiple functions, planning, design, and analysis of large, complex systems, prioritized optimization, mission engineering workforce development, emergency management planning and response, integrated infrastructure networks and grids, advanced manufacturing, public health and healthcare, and coastal resiliency.
