Job Description

The Office of Supportive Services is seeking an Academic Counselor for Academic Services for the Arthur 0. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program ( HEOP ). HEOP is funded in part by the New York State Education Department that supports college students from lower income earning families. HEOP collaborates with the Office of Admissions to identify and enroll students who are historically under-represented in higher education and provides supportive academic services to ensure their retention to graduation.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary. Some experience in counseling services is necessary.

Job Specific Qualifications
  • Background in academic advising and counseling for a diverse student population will be given priority.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills.
  • Ability to build productive and supportive relationships with a diverse group of students.
  • Willingness to work closely with assigned students to help build academic and other skills necessary for retention and graduation.
  • Willingness to learn university procedures and other processes relevant to serving program population.
  • Administrative support, counseling and assessment skills preferred.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating educational support programs.
Responsibilities

Effectively use academic counseling strategies within a case management framework to meet identified needs/goals.
Apply developmental models of counseling, solution-focused approaches and multicultural competencies to facilitate student success and retention.
Collaborate with HEOP students in assessing academic, financial, and other needs/goals.
Identify, recruit, enroll and retain students who are historically underrepresented at Syracuse University.
Provide academic, developmental, holistic case management services over 12 months to program students and SummerStart participants in an effort to retain and graduate students.
