The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a full-time, ten-month position as a French and Global Languages Instructor beginning August 1, 2023. This member of ASMSA’s faculty will play a critical role in the continued cultivation of the school’s global learning program as well as opportunities for students to develop exceptional language and cultural competencies.

In brief, ASMSA is tasked with providing extraordinary opportunities for a diverse group of students. Established by the General Assembly in 1991 as a public, residential high school to serve talented and motivated Arkansas high school students throughout the state as a school of choice, ASMSA—located in historic downtown Hot Springs and adjacent to Hot Springs National Park—is one of only 17 public, residential high schools in the United States specializing in the education of students with an interest in advanced careers in math and science as well as passion for and creativity within studio, language, and digital arts. ASMSA offers more than 70 courses for college credit, and all students earn an average of 50 hours of college credit while finishing high school. Graduates achieve an average ACT composite score of 30. Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and The Washington Post have ranked ASMSA among the nation’s Top 25 high schools over the past several years. ASMSA has been recognized by Code.org, Study.com, and the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools for its national excellence in STEM education.

All ASMSA students are required to complete at least two years of foreign language study, with students strongly encouraged to complete three years of the same language whenever possible. Students are well-positioned to earn the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy as a demonstration of their growth and ability. ASMSA’s Global Learning Program provides grant as well as needs-based support that allows more than 60 students plus faculty and staff to participate in travel, research, and exchange programs each year.

A Master’s degree in French, Foreign Language Teaching (with at least 18 graduate hours in French), or a comparable graduate degree is required. Candidates with the ability to teach a second language as well as those with a terminal degree will be given additional consideration based on program needs.

All candidates should demonstrate evidence of excellence in teaching. Preferred candidates will have a minimum of three years’ teaching experience. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curricula, team planning skills, and problem-solving skills congruent to a growing, dynamic academic program within a multidisciplinary institution.

As a residential community of learning, ASMSA’s core philosophy values the development of students’ interests and talents beyond the classroom. As such, faculty are expected to support student research projects, provide tutoring assistance, facilitate successful transitions, promote the school through outreach programs, and contribute to the residential experience.

Visit asmsa.org/employment-opportunities for institutional information and to apply. Candidate must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident.

Review of applications will commence January 15, 2023 and continue until the position has been filled. The estimated salary is $53,000-$60,000 based on degrees earned. ASMSA’s Faculty Advancement Plan provides avenues for academic promotion and salary increase for exceptional performance and support of the school’s mission in additional to ordinary raises through the annual evaluation process.
ASMSA is an AA/EOE employer.
