POSITION:

Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

 

 

INSTITUTION:

Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach. Coastal Carolina University enrolls over 10,000 students from 45 states and 58 nations. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the baccalaureate and selective master’s degrees of national and/or regional significance in the arts and sciences, business, humanities, education, and health and human services, a specialist degree in educational leadership, and PhD degrees in marine science and education.

REPORTS/RELATIONSHIPS:

This position will report directly to ­­­­the President and be expected to work independently to provide divisional leadership.

 

 

 

BASIC FUNCTIONS:

The individual who occupies this position will have the responsibility of guiding efforts to conceptualize, define, assess, nurture, and cultivate diversity and inclusion as an institutional resource for the University. The individual will provide executive-level leadership to vision development and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the University community.  

 

Specific duties will include, but not necessarily be limited to:

 

  • Provide strategic, integrated direction, and consultation on major institutional issues regarding diversity, inclusion, access, equity initiatives, cultural understanding, and competency; provide strategic direction and supervision for Intercultural and Inclusion Student Services and Accessibility and Disability Services.   Cultivate a campus culture that catalyzes interaction among diverse constituents of the University; develop new diversity initiatives, policies, and processes to drive organizational change and eliminate visible and invisible barriers.  Create and support programs, training opportunities, and best practices which foster diversity, inclusion, and global awareness. Lead the University’s Diversity Council and participate on planning/policy making committees in support of diversity and inclusion. Work closely with other University leaders to evaluate and advance diverse and inclusive hiring and management practices institution wide. Serve as the University’s chief spokesperson for diversity issues; work closely with campus partners, community organizations, businesses, and agency leaders on matters of common interest. Provide exceptional customer service to all constituents, including but not limited to, faculty, staff, students, visitors, and the community at large. Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • At least five years of experience demonstrating increasing levels of leadership responsibilities within diversity, equity, and inclusion. Experience working in or transferrable to an academic setting of an institution of higher education is highly desirable. Possess an excellent command of all aspects of diversity issues in higher education. Knowledge in higher education administration. Astute at navigating an institution’s political landscape and willing to challenge accepted approaches or to propose new ones. Possess the skills needed to work in a team environment and to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community. Demonstrated and progressive achievements in employment with tangible results within diversity, equity, and inclusion. Extensive experience in initiating, managing, and supporting programs related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Ability to teach and facilitate diversity-related training programs. Knowledge of equal employment opportunity laws and regulations. Possess the skills and abilities needed to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports and proposals. Ability to work collaboratively with various constituents, and the ability to identify and secure alternative revenue sources. Must be creative, analytical, driven by challenges, and oriented to the achievement of specific goals. Strong project management skills. Master’s degree required; PhD preferred.

 

COMPENSATION:

Compensation will be commensurate with experience including a competitive base salary, bonus opportunity, and competitive benefits package.
