EMPLOYMENT CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt (Hourly)
PRINCIPLE PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Mental illness is more prevalent than ever after all we have endured in 2020, especially in the healthcare field. Student health issues/crisis has become an alarming daily occurrence. This position will allow students in the School of Nursing a readily available, competent resource.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY:
To provide students with opportunities to receive mental health counseling. Counsel students individually and in group sessions to assist in overcoming challenges of nursing school, adjustments to life, and life changes. Maintains confidentiality relating to student interactions. Guides students in the development of skills and strategies to deal with their problems.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- An understanding of mental illness and its effects on an individual
- Ability to interact with individuals of all cognitive levels and various histories of trauma
- Being able to maintain healthy boundaries – we are here to help, not to befriend
- Patience and understanding
- Ability to verbally de-escalate agitated patients
- Supportive of teamwork – it takes a village
- A strong understanding of the importance of following rules and policies
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A Master’s Degree in Social Work or other mental health fields is required.
- One to two years of mental health experience is required.
- Certification or licensure in social work or mental health field required; e.g. CSW (with an approved contract with the board of Social Work), LCSW, LPCA, IPCC, etc.
- If an employee possesses an LPCA, LPA, or CSW, then they must have a contractual agreement for supervision. This agreement must be forwarded to HR for placement in their file.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Skills in case management.
- Skills in time management.
- Knowledge of acute psychological disorders, and advanced principles of abnormal psychology.
- Familiarity with follow-up resource services available to patients.
- Skills in conducting individual and family sessions.
- Skills in maintaining information as highly confidential.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS :
- Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
- No or very limited physical effort is required.
- No or very limited exposure to physical risk.
