Teaching Professor (all ranks) in Aviation Programs (Professional Flight)
Location: Arizona State University – Polytechnic Campus
The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University (ASU) and The Polytechnic School (TPS) seeks applicants for a faculty teaching professor (all ranks) position in TPS’ Aviation programs. Appointments may be at Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, or (Full) Teaching Professor rank commensurate with the candidate’s experience and accomplishments, beginning August 2023. This position is non-tenure track appointment with a fixed-term academic year contract. It is anticipated that the contract will be renewed annually subject to satisfactory performance and the needs of the unit.
The Professional Flight program is one of the outstanding programs on the ASU Polytechnic campus, which is conveniently located adjacent to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. The Professional Flight program curriculum is a unique program using a professional practice model, with integrated, active learning strategies, incorporating increasing levels of high technology simulators. The program graduates earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautical Management Technology, with a concentration in Professional Flight. This program is accredited by the Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). More information about the program can be found at https://poly.engineering.asu.edu/aviation/
The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses as assigned such as: Private, instrument, commercial, and/or instructor pilot ground schools; Aviation Weather/Meteorology; Aviation safety; Aviation security; General aviation operations and management; Airport management/planning; Air Transportation; Air Traffic Control; and, Unmanned aerial systems. Also, to assume FAA Chief Ground Instructor role for Part 141 ground courses; serve on program, school, and university committees as assigned; and, as faculty advisor for selected student clubs.
The Polytechnic School seeks candidates who have a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching that incorporates active learning, will contribute to our academic programs, will promote transdisciplinary teaching, and help the University to achieve its aspirations, including enabling student success, transforming society, and valuing entrepreneurship. Faculty members in the Fulton Schools of Engineering are expected to adopt effective pedagogical practices in the development and delivery of graduate and undergraduate courses.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Qualifications:
- Earned Master’s degree in engineering, aviation, or a related field by the time of appointment
- FAA Advanced Ground Instructor (or Certified Flight Instructor) and Instrument Ground Instructor (or Certified Flight Instructor Instrument) certificates
- Demonstrated experience in field applicable to aviation
- Commitment to teaching excellence as appropriate to the candidate’s rank
Desired Qualifications:
- Earned Doctorate or PhD degree in engineering, aviation, or a related field
- Current pilot qualifications
- Extensive aviation experience
- Evidence of excellence in university teaching
- Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative, transdisciplinary approach to teaching
