Job Description

The School of Plant and Environmental Sciences (SPES) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Virginia Tech seeks to fill an academic year (AY, 9-month) tenure-track faculty position in soil health and nutrient management with an emphasis on agronomic crops. The incumbent will be expected to develop an internationally-recognized and externally-funded research program focused on areas that may include, but are not limited to, implementing precision fertility applications based on variability in soil properties or crop traits; research on interactions between soil management, soil health, and crop system resilience; or developing site-specific agriculture management recommendations that take advantage of emerging technologies. The incumbent will maintain an active Hatch project and will collaborate with other faculty in SPES, across Virginia Tech and at other universities. The incumbent will teach two classes including Soil Fertility and Management and an additional course to be determined in conjunction with the SPES Director. The incumbent will serve on SPES and CALS committees, participate in SPES and CALS collegial community activities and be a good citizen of SPES, CALS, and the University and to contribute to the overall institutional mission of service to Virginia stakeholders.

Appointment: 60% research, 30% teaching and 10% service. This incumbent will conduct research on soil health and nutrient management and will teach two courses, including Soil Fertility and Management and an additional course to be determined in conjunction with the SPES Director. Service will include serving on committees, service to professional organizations and participation in SPES and CALS collegial community activities.

Required Qualifications

• Ph.D. in soil science, agronomy, ecology, or closely related field.
• Background in soil health and nutrient management related to agricultural production.
• Demonstrated strong communication skills
• A commitment to mentoring students, diversity and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in undergraduate or graduate teaching
• Experience in publishing
• Experience in grant writing and submission
