About the Department/Unit

The HR Communications function is part of the Talent Strategies team in the Office of Human Resources. We’re a collaborative, diverse, and dynamic group that focuses on the employee experience. As a part of the HR Comms team, you’ll be plugged into the initiatives and benefits that make AU an exciting place to work and help advance the Changemaker experience.

Summary/Objective

The Communications & Graphics Coordinator supports the delivery of high-impact, integrated communications to improve faculty and staff awareness and understanding of HR strategic initiatives, employee benefits, wellness, learning and development, and all other Human Resources communications needs.

The Communications & Graphics Coordinator is responsible for the management of small to medium-scale projects and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and on budget. The Communications & Graphics Coordinator writes and edits copy, designs graphics for digital and print media, conducts research for communications, manages creative production, schedules digital and social media placements, and coordinates with internal partners and vendors to ensure project timelines are met. This position works under general supervision.

Essential Functions
  • Project Management:Coordinate multiple projects and meet milestones and deadlines. Coordinate administrative functions, including procurement and payables for third-party vendors.
  • Graphic Design:Design print and digital communication using creative design tools, including Adobe Design products – Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. Format emails to visually convey content in an engaging and concise manner.
  • Writing:Write and edit copy for print and digital communication pieces and campaigns. Write and edit for monthly newsletters to share human resources information to faculty and staff.
  • Web & Social Media Content Management:Create content, edit copy and post content for american.edu and social media. Manage Twitter and Facebook accounts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Supervisory Responsibility
    • This position reports directly to the Director of HR Communications and is part of the Talent Strategies Team, although it supports all HR functions. This position does not have any supervisory responsibility.
    • Responsible for providing communications support to the HR teams (benefits/wellness, service delivery, recruiting, workplace learning and development, compensation), Payroll and Budget. Design and distribute communications materials to 2,500 full-time faculty and staff, 1,000 part-time staff and adjuncts, as warranted.
    Work Environment
    • This is a Hybrid 3 position with one day a week onsite and four days of remote work.

    Required Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, graphic/web design or a closely related field, or equivalent in education, training, and experience is required.
    • At least 2 years work experience in graphic design is also required.
    • Successful candidates will be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite, have intermediate-level graphic design experience using the Adobe Suite Products (Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator), have excellent attention to detail, have good research skills, and be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
    • Candidates must be able to accept feedback with a positive attitude, be motivated to learn and expand skill set and build successful working relationships in a highly collaborative and diverse environment.
    • Candidates will be expected to present a portfolio including samples of both creative/graphic design and business writing.
