Description

The Department of Modern Languages, in conjunction with the Center for Black European Studies and the Atlantic at Carnegie Mellon University, invites application for a 2-year, non-renewable postdoctoral fellowship in Black Europeans Studies. We encourage scholars with deep interest in the study of culture and identities in one of the languages offered in the department: French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian and Arabic. We seek a rising scholar (candidates who received, or will receive, their Ph.D. degree between 2018 and August 30, 2023) whose work is grounded in a transdisciplinary understanding of race within the global Atlantic, and its intersection with environmental and health studies, women’s and gender studies, urban studies, technology, data, performance, religion and citizenship.

Fellows are expected to push forward new research directions, assist in proposal writing for new research, give one lecture per year, and participate in the intellectual life of the center, the department and the college.

CBESA is an interdisciplinary research hub dedicated to the collection, production, restoration and dissemination of scholarship on people of African descent in Europe, and the study of exchanges between Black Europe, Africa and the Americas. The center aims at fostering collaboration between scholars, educators, policy makers and communities, as well as producing educational programs on transatlantic circulations of Blackness.

The successful candidate will benefit from a strong and growing support of interdisciplinary humanities research and teaching at Carnegie Mellon, including such initiatives as the Center for the Arts in Society, Humanities@CMU, the Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy and Askwith Kenner Global Languages and Cultures Room.

Carnegie Mellon University is committed to increasing the diversity of its community on a range of intellectual and cultural dimensions. Carnegie Mellon University challenges the curious and passionate to imagine and deliver work that matters.

A private, global research university, Carnegie Mellon stands among the world's most renowned educational institutions, and sets its own course. Start the journey here.

Over the past 10 years, more than 400 startups linked to CMU have raised more than $7 billion in follow-on funding. Those investment numbers are especially high because of the sheer size of Pittsburgh’s growing autonomous vehicles cluster – including Uber, Aurora, Waymo and Motional – all of which are here because of their strong ties to CMU.

With cutting-edge brain science, path-breaking performances, innovative startups, driverless cars, big data, big ambitions, Nobel and Turing prizes, hands-on learning, and a whole lot of robots, CMU doesn't imagine the future, we create it.

Many seek Pittsburgh for being a hot spot for entrepreneurship and a model for future cities. Others come for the city's burgeoning food scene.
