The Mechanical Engineering Department at Union College of Schenectady, NY invites applications for a three-year lecturer position starting September, 2023. The position is for a period of three years, with the possibility of renewal. Lecturers can go up for promotion to senior lecturer after six years at the College. We are looking for a candidate who can teach a wide range of undergraduate mechanical engineering courses in at least one of the following areas: solid mechanics (e.g., courses in statics, dynamics, and strength of materials), thermal fluid sciences (e.g., courses in thermodynamics and fluid mechanics) and controls (e.g., courses in system dynamics, control theory, and mechatronics). An ability to teach courses in manufacturing (e.g., courses in engineering graphics) and the College’s introductory engineering course (ESC 100, required of all first-year engineering students) is also required.  In addition to teaching the lecturer will have co-curricular responsibilities to include (1) serving as the primary resource for our first- and second-year students and (2) being responsible for mentoring ME students and helping them better understand the commitment needed to succeed in an engineering curriculum.

A Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering (or closely related field) is required, but applicants close to finishing their Ph.D. will also be considered. We strongly encourage applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in the field. Increasing diversity on campus is a key objective of this hire and a top priority for Union, one that is integral to our mission of preparing students for a globally interconnected world.

Union College is an undergraduate, residential, independent, liberal arts college committed to integrating engineering and science with the humanities and social sciences in new and exciting ways. Union’s mechanical engineering program is one of the College’s four ABET accredited degree programs.  The College is committed to the Templeton Institute for engineering and computer science  which aims to develop innovative coursework and co-curricular programming that integrates engineering and computer science with the liberal arts, offer students high-impact experiential opportunities, and recruit and retain a diverse student body in these fields.  We are located in Schenectady, a culturally rich and diverse city in the New York State's Capital Region, three hours from NYC, Boston and Montreal. We fully support interdisciplinary learning opportunities for students and interdisciplinary teaching opportunities for faculty. We are an equal opportunity employer and strongly committed to student and workforce diversity. We blend intellectual, social and cultural opportunities to facilitate the integrated academic, social and personal development of a diverse community. We value and are committed to a host of diverse populations and cultures including those based on race, religion, disability, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, national origin and veteran status.

The application package must include: a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a teaching statement and a mentoring statement. The teaching statement should reflect on teaching experience, as well as information on how the applicant can contribute to the diversity of educational experiences and offerings and engage with students with diverse skills or backgrounds. The mentoring statement should comment on previous or planned mentoring and advising experiences involving  a diverse group of undergraduate engineering students.  Applicants will be asked to include names and contact information for three references through our online application system at jobs.union.edu. An email will be sent automatically to references requesting a letter of recommendation.  Review of applications will begin on February 20, 2023 and will continue until the position is filled. Questions may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Professor David Hodgson, hodgsond@union.edu.

Note: All new hires of Union College are subject to a thorough education, work experience, and criminal history background check.
