Assistant Professor of Aviation

The Aviation Program at Rocky Mountain College in Billings, Montana invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in August 2023. The position includes teaching a half-time course load of 12 contact hours total for fall and spring semesters (on average, six per semester). During the summer, quarter-time responsibilities for safety would exist, with commensurate pay.  Additional duties include serving as the primary AATD (simulator) , and instruct and coordinate Crew Resource Management training in the RMC’s Red Bird AATD. The successful candidate will be expected to teach a course load of six contact hours both fall and spring semesters. In this capacity, the successful candidate must have a broad background in aviation and be able to adapt to teaching a variety of aviation courses.  These could include any FAA Part 141 ground school courses, aircraft systems and power plants, aviation safety, a variety of topics in aviation management, airline dispatch, etc.  A master’s degree in aviation, education, business or a related field is required.  FAA Certified Flight Instructor certificate with Instrument Airplane (CFI-IA) rating or FAA Advanced Ground Instructor (AGI) and Instrument Ground Instructor (IGI) are desired.  Experience as a pilot in a multi-crew aircraft is desired. Opportunities to teach as a CFI in an airplane could exist, if desired, but is not expected of the employee.  This person is a member of the Aviation Review Board assisting in the overall direction of the Aviation Program. 

As the Safety Director, this position is responsible for leading all aspects of the Safety Program including but not limited to: development of Safety Management Systems, training, meetings, inspections and audits, the Safety Committee, relationships with FAA, and incident/accident investigation. In the role of Aviation Safety Director, this position reports to the President of Rocky Mountain College for issues related to safety. This is to ensure critical safety issues can be handled outside of the chain of command in the Aviation Program if necessary.  On a day-to-day basis, this position reports to the Director of Aviation for issues related to safety. The successful candidate will support and carry out the mission of the college as well as demonstrate a commitment to developing and enhancing a culture of rigor, excellence, and achievement.

Starting salary will be in the low $60,000s. Half-time teaching candidates are welcome to apply in a non-tenure track capacity, with a commensurate reduction in salary.
