The salary range for this position is $60,000 – $62,000 at Assistant Professor rank. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based upon a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, education, experience, specialty and training.

Position Summary

Metropolitan State University of Denver invites applications for two tenure track positions at assistant professor level, one each in Journalism and Public Relations, respectively. These are nine-month appointments beginning August 2023. The Journalism focused position may include teaching the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, Column Writing, Short- and Long-form Article Writing, Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism and Social Documentary. The Public Relations focused position may include teaching the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, PR in Crises, PR Lab, Mobile and Social Media.

Duties/Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities include the following activities:
  1. Teach 9 credit hours per semester of undergraduate coursework. Candidates will be expected to teach in the classroom as well as online and must be able to use and apply current technologies in the classroom
    • Teaching for the Public Relations focused position may include the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, PR in Crises, PR Lab, Mobile and Social Media.
    • Teaching for the Journalism focused position may include the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, Column Writing, Short- and Long-form Article Writing, Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism and Social Documentary.
  2. In addition to teaching, the position will require a minimum of five office hours per week to include advising and consultation with students
  3. Provide service to the department, college, university and/or community
  4. Participate in scholarly activities appropriate to the discipline as described in the Department Evaluation Guidelines
  5. Faculty engage in other duties, including faculty on reassigned time to serve in roles such as Department Chairs or Directors, will be reviewed on those activities


Required Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Journalism, Communication, Public Relations, or related field, plus 6 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications
  • Terminal degree (PhD or EdD) in a relevant discipline
  • Experience in course development
  • The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach courses that involve use of digital media, current social media applications and other relevant technology that relates to the convergent journalism and public relations field
  • 10 or more years of successful professional experience that includes knowledge of convergent media, public relations issues and the use of social media applications and platforms
  • The successful candidate for the public relations focused position must be capable of teaching the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, PR in Crises, PR Lab, Mobile and Social Media (for course descriptions refer to https://catalog.msudenver.edu/index.php )
  • The successful candidate for the journalism focused position must be capable of teaching the following courses: Journalism Fundamentals, Introduction to Public Relations, Column Writing, Short- and Long-form Article Writing, Multimedia Journalism, Photojournalism and Social Documentary (for course descriptions refer to https://catalog.msudenver.edu/index.php )
  • Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in journalism in the form of awards for journalistic work, successful publishing of a book or books, or commendation for journalism teaching experience
  • The ability to use appropriate educational technology
  • Experience with non-traditional students and diverse urban groups
  • In particular, we seek candidates who demonstrate the ability to teach from a perspective that includes women and historically minoritized and marginalized groups
