    Santa Barbara City College is seeking two full-time, tenure track faculty members position in the English Program to start in Fall 2023. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.

    Our Department of English is fully committed to the Chancellor's Vision of Student Success and therefore addressing and reducing opportunity gaps across disproportionately impacted student populations. Teaching responsibilities will consist primarily of transfer-level composition with the possibility of teaching one literature or creative writing course per semester. The faculty member will also participate in the review and assessment of our disaggregated course success rate and student learning outcome data as we continue to
    adjust, redesign, and decolonize our curriculum in relation to AB 705/AB 1705 and our recently awarded $3M Title V HSI Grant, which aims to increase the college composition course completion rates for Latin, low-income, and first-generation students within their first year of enrollment. Other responsibilities include maintenance of required office hours sufficient to meet student needs and college policy, full participation in departmental responsibilities including serving as department chair on a rotation basis, and participation in the governance of the college via committee assignments. The faculty member will also complete 60 hours of professional development each year, which could include campus-led initiatives emphasizing equity-minded and culturally responsive curriculum and pedagogy.

    SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:

    The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $64,204 - $100,654 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,210.20. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $128,134, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

    Representative Duties

    DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of two (2) out of the four (4) Cluster Hire characteristics

  • Commitment to the community college mission.
  • An understanding of the implications a Hispanic-Serving designation suggests for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.
  • An understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of racially and/or ethnically minoritized students within Higher Education shape patterns of participation and outcomes within the classroom.
  • Evidence of working effectively with racially and/or ethnically diverse populations.
  • Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of students with different ability statuses (e.g. physical and/or learning)
  • An understanding of anti-racist and culturally-responsive pedagogical practices which honor and respect what students bring to the classroom and uses students' prior knowledge and/or lived experiences to inform instruction.
  • Evidence of working effectively with post-traditional students.
    • Proven development of innovative curricular and pedagogical strategies including course content, assignments, and/or assessment practices that engage and increase the success of disproportionately impacted student populations in an online, hybrid, hyflex, and/or face-to-face college composition course.
    • Evidence of using your own student feedback, course evaluations, and/or disaggregated student success data as the basis for innovation in your curriculum and pedagogy.
    • Commitment to and/or evidence of teaching reading strategies from a community cultural wealth perspective in an online, hybrid, hyflex, and/or face-to-face environment.
    • Proven experience innovating with technologies that support online, hybrid, hyflex, and/or face-to-face instruction.
    • Investment and interest in curricular initiatives that seek to remedy exclusionary historical practices in the field of English that shape patterns of participation and outcomes for historically minoritized groups of students.


    Education and Experience

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.

    1. Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition OR

    2. Bachelor's in any of the above AND
    3. Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing or journalism OR
    4. Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
    5. Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.


    If the title of your degree as stated on your transcripts DOES NOT EXACTLY MATCH one of the degree titles listed in the minimum qualifications listed above, you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application.     Selection Procedure:

    The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
