Position Summary:

Two Assistant Lecturers or Assistant Instructors in Electronic Journalism, dependent on qualifications, in The School of Journalism and Advertising at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, College of arts and Media.  This is a term, non-tenure track appointment beginning fall 2023.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidates will teach undergraduate courses in some combination of the areas of news writing, news and sports reporting, producing, investigative reporting, and documentary; will be assigned to work with student-produced news entities including The Daily Egyptian and the live newscast, River Region Evening Edition.  They will collaborate with the staff of WSIU Public Broadcasting Service. The successful candidates are expected to become an active member of the department.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in Journalism or a related field for appointment at the rank of Assistant Instructor.  Position requires a minimum of 10 years of experience as a multi-media Journalist.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's degree in Journalism or a related field for the rank of Assistant Lecturer.  Candidates with more than 10 years of experience as a multi-media journalist with a particular emphasis on sports, and/or investigative reporting, food journalism, and/or documentary.

 

General Information:

Established in 1947, The School of Journalism and Advertising has 12 Full-time faculty members who are accomplished scholars and professionals. The School of Journalism and Advertising is a lab-based school where students have the opportunity to work for the school newspaper The Daily Egyptian, the Saluki Adlab or River Region Evening Edition. The Daily Egyptian, established in 1916, has a rich history and has consistently earned prestigious awards. The Adlab provides professional experience creating advertising for various businesses in Southern Illinois. River Region Evening Edition is a news program broadcast on the PBS affiliate WSIU-TV. The school has specializations in News Editorial, Electronic Journalism, Advertising & Integrated Marketing Communications, Photojournalism, Media Industries, SportsMedia, and Mass Communications. The school offers a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, a PhD., and an on-line undergraduate degee. Our faculty guide students not only in the use of the latest technologies, but also in developing an understanding of the social, political and economic contexts of the media they produce and analyze. Faculty and students work closely with the University's public radio and television stations, WSIU-FM & WSIU-TV, as well as collaborating with other academic units within the College and the greater University. The College of Arts and Media houses six schools; Architecture, Art & Design, Journalism and advertising, Media Arts, Music, Theater and Dance. The breadth of programs offered in the college provides a rich environment for interdisciplinary collaborative research. Southern Illinois University Carbondale is a Carnegie Doctoral Research University with an enrollment of approximately 11,000 students, and is located in the forested areas of Shawnee Hills, 100 miles southeast of St. Louis, Mo. The university is known for its efforts in improving opportunity, inclusivity, sustainability and the ecological beauty of the campus and surrounding community.
