Santa Barbara City College is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member positions in the credit English as a Second Language Program to start in Fall 2023. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.
The successful candidate for the position is an equity-minded professional dedicated to excellence in teaching ESL, to the success of every student and to collaboration with faculty, staff and administration across the campus community.
The credit Santa Barbara City College ESL Program is an academic program serving both resident and international ESL students as they pursue degree, career and personal goals. The primary teaching assignment involves all skill areas and levels of ESL from beginning level to college English coursework, in both the day and evening schedule. The program has daytime and evening offerings at all levels. A strong candidate for this position must demonstrate a profound understanding of and experience with successfully supporting individuals of widely varying backgrounds. This candidate demonstrates the use of dynamic, learner-centered, culturally responsive teaching pedagogy that meets the varying needs of our students and ensures a successful learning environment in both face-to-face and synchronous online settings. In addition to teaching, the position also involves working on curriculum and program development; participating in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities; assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaborating across disciplines; leveraging student support resources; and participating in ongoing professional development.
The credit ESL Program serves both resident and international multilingual students from beginning level to college English. This position will be responsible for preparing and delivering English as a Second Language instruction to a diverse student population using engaging, innovative and student-centered pedagogy that reflects a commitment to success, equity, respect for diversity, an understanding of culturally responsive teaching, and expertise in teaching ESL. Responsibilities of this faculty team member include:
- Fulfill all professional responsibilities of a full-time
faculty member, including, but not limited to the following: teach
all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board
Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate
records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; post and
maintain scheduled office hours; and participate in departmental
meetings and college and/or district-wide committees as
assigned.
- Prepare and deliver student-centered courses in the field of
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) to a diverse student
population utilizing a variety of instructional approaches and
strategies appropriate to the needs of credit community college
students, including: application of integrated skills approaches,
metacognitive routines, socio-affective strategies, and cooperative
/collaborative learning.
- Evaluate student progress using multiple measures and provide
clear, timely feedback reflecting approved program learning
outcomes and departmental expectations.
- Promote student success and retention by working with student
support services staff to increase student access to college
services and programs.
- Work and collaborate effectively with students, staff, and
members of the public from diverse cultural, social, economic, and
educational backgrounds.
- Participate actively in departmental responsibilities and
departmental governance, including curriculum creation, review and
revision; program review; evaluation of adjunct faculty; assessment
of student learning outcomes at the course and program
level.
- Maintain currency in the TESOL field in the credit community
college environment through a variety of professional development
activities.
- Work as part of a team to create and support division and
departmental activities, training, initiatives and goals through
active and collegial engagement in decision-making and planning to
address increased student success, new pedagogies, and state
directives such as AB705.
- Incorporate and employ current technology in instruction,
course management (Canvas), communication and data-gathering, and
integrate technology into curriculum and instruction.
- Serve on college-wide and departmental committees, councils,
work groups, and task forces and participate in ESL departmental
leadership roles.
SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:
The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $64,204 - $100,654 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,210.20. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $128,134, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.

- Demonstrated ability to work well with colleagues, adapt to a
rapidly changing environment, collaborate effectively with faculty
and staff across campus and resolve conflict
- Experience with online class management systems and the use of
technology to deliver and enhance instruction
- Expertise in teaching integrated language skills across all
skill levels and skill areas
- Demonstrated knowledge of the implications of AB705 for ESL
programs and students, emphasizing current approaches to teaching
reading and writing as integrated skills
- Willingness to engage in reflective examination and improvement
of one's instructional and relational practices to more effectively
engage and support racially minoritized students
Education and Experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
- Master's in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with a TESL emphasis, linguistics with a TESL emphasis, English with a TESL emphasis or education with a TESL emphasis, OR
- Bachelor's in TESL, TESOL, English with a TESL certificate, linguistics with a TESL certificate, applied linguistics with a TESL certificate, or any foreign language with a TESL certificate AND Master's in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, speech or any foreign language, OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
- Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.

Selection Procedure:
The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire. Candidates will participate primarily in remote interviews and in some instances final interviews may be conducted in person while observing all health and safety protocols as approved by the Santa Barbara County Health Department.
