Santa Barbara City College is seeking a full-time, tenure track faculty member position in the American Ethnic Studies Program to start in Fall 2023. In 2009, SBCC was designated as an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting our responsibility to support and serve the needs of our Latina/o/x students. Moreover, given our overall student population, the ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to join a department that is dedicated to the use of curriculum and pedagogy that shares SBCC's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse post-traditional student population.
Commencing Fall 2023, a full-time, tenure-track position will be available in the Department of American Ethnic Studies. Primary responsibilities will include teaching Asian American Studies (Comparative Asian-American History and Contemporary Asian-American History and Culture) and Native American Studies ( American Indian Past and Present, and The Native American in the 20th Century Society) and other specialized areas in Ethnic Studies. Other responsibilities will include teaching honors section, participating in the Ethnic Studies club; fulfilling professional responsibilities which include maintenance of required office hours sufficient to meet student needs and college policy, and full participation in departmental and divisional obligations.
SALARY & PERSONNEL BENEFITS:
The current salary schedule range for an entering tenure-track faculty member is $64,204 - $100,654 plus an earned doctoral bonus of $3,210.20. Depending on the entry step, the faculty member advances one-step each year and has the potential to reach the current maximum step of $128,134, depending on the educational level attained. Starting salary is commensurate with academic preparation and full-time related, paid experience. In addition to salary, each full-time employee participates in a "cafeteria style" health and welfare benefits program.
Education and Experience
Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications for the discipline as approved by the California Community Colleges Board of Governors and defined in the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges handbook.
- Master's in the ethnic studies field
- Master's in American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Cross Cultural Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian-American Studies, or African-American Studies OR
- Possess a combination of education and experience that is at least the equivalent to all of the above. Candidates making an application on the basis of equivalency must submit an Application for Equivalency in addition to all other required material.
- Evidence of a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, culture, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
If the title of your degree as stated on your transcripts DOES NOT EXACTLY MATCH one of the degree titles listed in the minimum qualifications listed above, you must request an equivalency review and submit conclusive supporting documents at the time of application. The selection committee, who will recommend candidates for personal interviews at SBCC, will initially review online applications. A teaching demonstration will be required for selected applicants. After the initial interviews have been conducted, the committee will recommend the top candidates to the Superintendent/President for a final interview. The successful candidate's name will then be presented to the Board of Trustees for final approval and authorization to hire.
