JOB SUMMARY

The Department of World Languages and Literatures invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Japanese Language and Asian Studies, which will begin in August of 2023. This is a full-time, tenure-track position. In addition to expertise in Japanese language, literature, and culture; an additional specialization in linguistics and the ability to teach Korean or Chinese language, literature, and culture are also desirable.

TYPICAL ACTIVITIES

The faculty member will be responsible for teaching two general education courses in English (JAPN 2900 “Japanese Literature in English” and JAPN 3900 “Voices and Visions from the World of Japanese Anime and Manga”) and a variety of courses in Japanese. In addition, the faculty member may teach Japanese linguistics. They will participate in curriculum development, work collaboratively with faculty in other departments, organize cultural activities, maintain an active research agenda, and provide service to the department, college, and university.

Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff and students across a wide range of disciplines.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

ABD or Ph.D. in Japanese, Asian Studies, or related discipline by time of appointment

Relevant teaching experience and pedagogical training

Active research agenda

The ability to teach in Japanese and English

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Ph.D. in Japanese, Asian Studies, or related discipline by time of appointment
• Two years of university/college teaching experience
• A record of scholarship commensurate with an Assistant Professor

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of World Languages and Literatures offers the M.A. degree in Spanish, B.A. degrees in Arabic, French and Spanish, and several certificate programs and minors (including Japanese). In addition, we offer courses in American Sign Language (ASL), Chinese, Korean, and California indigenous languages. The university has established an exchange program with Seijo University in Tokyo. Students can also participate in CSU International Programs in China, Japan, South Korea, and many other countries. The department sponsors a variety of cultural events (Japan Expo, Anime Expo, Cosplay Runway Event, Korean Festival, etc.) and student clubs (American X Japanese Cross Cultural Club, Korean Culture Club, etc.).
