POSITION SUMMARY

Occidental College and a leading mineral exploration company have formed an alliance to develop a borehole muon detector designed to detect subsurface mineral deposits.  Occidental seeks to hire a Research Scientist to work on campus to develop, test and then deploy the first version of this detector.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  1. Study and understand the current design and update the design as needed
  2. Design and build the slow control, gas system and DAQ of the ground station
  3. Commission the v1 detector with benchmarked runs
  4. Deploy the v1 detector, cable and ground station in a local borehole
  5. Establish running procedures for the entire v1 system
  6. Prepare to install the v1 system remotely

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Physics
  • Demonstrated lab skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree
  • Hands-on experience working with particle detectors
  • Fluency in CAD software
  • The initiative and drive to carry out a rapid development of a unique detector
  • Willingness to travel to remote sites to oversee installation and operations
