Job Details

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, a division of the University of Virginia located in Wise, Virginia, invites applications for a faculty position in psychology. The position is a 9-month tenure-track position at the assistant professor level with a start date of August 2023.

As part of the Social Sciences Department, the tenure-track faculty position specialization is open, but preference will be given to candidates in Clinical/Counseling Psychology. Applicants will be expected to teach core courses in psychology including but not limited to introduction to psychology, counseling theory, counseling practicum, and upper-level courses in the applicant’s field of expertise. Ability to supervise undergraduate internships is essential.

Special attention will be given to applicants who have a background in Neuropsychology/Brain and Cognitive Psychology, and plan to incorporate this specialization into their research. The department is particularly interested in individuals with a background in addiction or aging, both needs that reach the broader population of rural Southwest Virginia. Also of interest, this year, the University of Virginia announced that it is launching a $75M investment in neuroscience research through its Grand Challenges Initiative.  There may be opportunities for the selected candidate to participate in this initiative.

Preference will be given to candidates who articulate a clear understanding of UVA Wise’s public liberal arts mission and who express specific interest and have experience in the mentoring of students.

This position is a full-time, 9-month commitment at the assistant professor level and with the potential for summer teaching and research support. Duties include creating and teaching courses in psychology, serving the department and college on various committees; advising students; pursuing ongoing scholarly activity, particularly that involves undergraduates; and assisting the department chair with assessment and other duties as needed.

Successful candidates must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; should have the demonstrated ability for engaged and innovative teaching at the undergraduate level; must have a Ph.D. (ABD candidates will be considered but must have the Ph.D. completed by the date of appointment) in Psychology, with a preference for specialization in clinical/counseling psychology.
