THE SEARCH

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) seeks an innovative, distinguished academic and collaborative leader to serve as provost. As a top-tier R1 research institution, Rensselaer continues to build upon its reputation and mission to provide students with the education and tools needed for impactful careers. Conveniently located in New York’s Capital District, the Institute leads the way in industry connections and research impact through strategic partnerships and continued focus on weaving together education and research.

As the nation’s first and one of the world’s most renowned technological research universities, the Institute has been a leader in STEM for nearly 200 years. RPI also prioritizes interdisciplinary collaboration in educating 5,614 undergraduates and 1,300 graduate students in 140 programs across five schools. With a deep commitment to impactful teaching and research, the Institute is uniquely well-positioned to develop new initiatives in translational research and regional partnerships as the Capital District transforms into a technology hub for areas such as semiconductors, gaming, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity, clean energy technologies, and biotechnology research and manufacturing.

With a recent change in presidential leadership after 23 years, RPI is at an exciting inflection point. The next provost will have an immediate and long-lasting impact in shaping the future of the academic enterprise at the Institute. The provost’s influence will be rooted in the four pillars of education, research, translation, and regional engagement. RPI is poised for significant growth as it looks to expand its faculty ranks considerably. Strong scholarship as well as a diverse faculty cohort are of the utmost importance as Rensselaer continues to lead in interdisciplinary innovation and research. As upstate New York becomes the epicenter of microchip manufacturing in the U.S. with federal government and private sector investment, the next provost will seize opportunities to build upon RPI’s legacy as a leader in technological innovation. The successful candidate will be a bold driver of innovation and bring an outstanding record of scholarly achievement, as well as a deep interest in shaping the future of higher education through collaborative leadership.
