Job Summary/Basic Function

The John W. Garland College of Engineering, Science, Technology, and Agriculture ( JWGCESTA ) invites applicants to apply for the position of Communications and Marketing Specialist. This is a full-time, exempt position. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
This position is critical for providing technical writing, communications, and marketing support for our land-grant Extension and Agricultural Research Development ( ARD ) programs and research.
The appointment will be primarily with JWGCESTA Extension and ARD .

JOB SUMMARY
Candidates should understand and have experience in technical writing and editing, as well as an
understanding of the latest trends in marketing and communication-especially as it relates to agriculture and natural resources ( ANR ).

The Land-Grant Communications and Media Specialist will assist the Land-Grant Communication
Coordinator with writing and editing technical documents, marketing, communication, media relations, and print outreach materials for Land-Grant CSU - ARD . The position works in collaboration with the Communication Coordinator, Associate Director of Research, Associate Director of Extension, Program Leaders, Principal Investigators, and ARD Researchers. May also collaborate with other Land-Grant staff as applicable. This role requires strong technical writing and editorial skills. A knowledge of scientific concepts is preferred as well as a keen understanding of the placement of scientific and research articles.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Host Extension Connection Weekly Podcast
Produce Quarterly ARD and/or Extension Newsletter as assigned.
Manage social media for ARD and/or Extension as assigned

Work with the Communication Coordinator to develop and implement an integrated PR, marketing, and communications plan consistent with the goals of the JWGCESTA /Land Grant mission.
Supervise student workers, as necessary, to ensure the goals and objectives of the
communications plans are met.

Assists with the creation and implementation of targeted communication and projects to
reach specific audiences in programming and other outreach including print and electronic
communication (web, social media).

Provide support to extension and research personnel in the development of educational
materials for programs, and promotion of planned events.

Develop and write feature stories, press releases, web communication, and social media
strategies to distribute stories and news to various outlets.

Performs communications, public relations, and marketing duties as assigned including,
but not limited to audiovisual recording, photography, special events planning, and
implementation.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in marketing, public relations, journalism, communications, technical
writing, broadcast media, or related fields.

Five (5) years of experience in a field related to public relations, communications, marketing,
journalism, technical writing, broadcast media, or related field.

Required Knowledge (as demonstrated by a Portfolio, digital or print)
Demonstrated:
  • Knowledge and skill in writing and communicating with a variety of
  • groups/audiences.
  • Ability to create, compose and edit the content, structure, and format of a range of written materials including, speeches, informational publications, news releases, etc.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to various internal and external audiences.
  • Ability to manage an organization’s social media presence.
  • Ability to work independently and carry out assignments without detailed instructions.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, tact, and diplomacy in interactions with others including issues that may be sensitive in nature.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer including the use of word processing, graphic design, desktop publishing, multimedia, social media, database, and spreadsheet software applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop,
  • WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.
Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of land-grant mission (Research, Teaching, Extension) Experience
working in higher education.

Knowledge of Media Distribution, especially Meltwater
Experience in digital and social media, advertising, and creative services including design and layout,desktop publishing; presentation; database software, and video production.

Ability to plan and maintain a flexible work schedule, including evening and weekend work to
meet time demands and/or special needs of program management
