Position Overview

Menlo College invites applications and nominations for the position of Controller. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is a senior-level manager responsible for accounting functions, including the College’s financial books and records. The position is a highly technical role.  The right candidate also needs to have expertise in accounting and compliance, as well as staff development. The Controller must be a relatable collaborative leader who assists in making the entire College community strive to follow policies, procedures, and best practices. The Controller may play an important role in the implementation of a transition to new accounting and financial system. Overall, the Controller has primary responsibility for the strategic direction and leadership of the Menlo College Business Office.  They will be responsible for day-to-day leadership and supervision of all phases of financial services operation in a collaborative environment in an efficient and effective manner.  The oversight extends to all business office-related areas, including: 

 

• Accounts payable

• Accounts receivable

• Student accounts

• Audits

• Capital financing

• Contracts and agreements management and oversight

• Financial processes, procedures and policies

• Financial reporting and forecasting

• Payroll and benefits processing and management

• Insurances and liability coverages

• Vendors and customers relations

• Banking activities

• General accounting

 

The Position  

The Controller maintains a broad institutional perspective that supports the College’s mission, vision, and goals, while fostering and creating an environment that strives to project and meet student, faculty, staff, and business partner needs.  The Controller facilitates a shared leadership culture through the development of functional teams and is accountable for implementing and developing the means to accomplish the college’s financial goals.  The Controller is accountable for the timely completion of projects and activities in the Business Office; the implementation, development and updates of all financial services/business office processes, procedures and policies; ensuring consistency of application and compliance with College, state and federal requirements, as well as best business, accounting and financial reporting practices; and oversight of the annual audits and tax preparation processes.  Other duties as assigned.

 

The Controller must be a forward-looking technical expert and a leader with strong strategic and analytical skills, a demonstrable commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging, and an excellent and accomplished manager, mentor, and collaborator. The Controller leads the Business Office team, and work hand-in-hand with all college deans, directors, and officers. 

 

Qualifications

• A minimum of a bachelor's degree with a preferred major in accounting and/or business administration 

• Certified Public Accountant preferred

• Knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations

• Ability to work independently and anticipate next steps

• Computer proficiency, especially with spreadsheet and database software

• Ten years demonstrated ability and experience in accounting and financial services in higher education

• Successful track record of professional staff supervision

• Experience in high level fund accounting

• Hands-on background in strategic and operational planning, as well as budget development

• Working knowledge of Jenzabar and QuickBooks preferred

• An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered
